So I guess I know why sellers raise their price to ridiculous prices now.

So, while looking for a guitar today, I come across a listing for a VERY expensive "generic" Stratocaster guitar at an unreasonable price.

I look at the listing and the first sentence says "Important Note:
We are currently in search of a new Vendor for our Vong Co Guitars.
Rather than cancel this listing along with our history of selling these unique guitars on eBay,we have raised the price to an unreasonable amount, to discourage purchase at this time. When
we find a suitable vendor, the price will be adjusted at that time. Thank you for your patience and understanding."

So, I guess this seller doesn't think that search and browser manipulation is a violation? He even has a number of other listings with the same "disclaimer". Even more listings in the wrong category (offering phone book software in the telephone hardware category)!

PLUS, I thought "Stratocaster" was a copyrighted name for Fender, I didn't know they made copies with the same name.

I guess he didn't want to lose his place in the search results. I would think this is a violation, but I guess its the Wild West here now.

It's a shame that listings are not even looked at anymore (by eBay), let alone sellers.  😞

I hate reporting fellow sellers. I would normally just email them and advise them.

These types of listings BOOSTS the potential value of Ebay, at least when spread sheets are presented to investers.

If the investers ever came here and saw the real story, rather than just looking at just numbers, things would cleaned up quickly.

Now, this is an interesting point that I have never considered. Even if 10% of EBay's listing are really not available for purchase, that is a LOT of money which would explain why eBay does not enforce their own rules.

Actually, I don't believe the name "Stratocaster" would fall under copyright protection.  I believe it is a trademark.

Somebody needs to tell them about the "Out of Stock" Option flag.  I've got dozens of out of stock items at any point in time, and they do not show up until I restock them.  Nobody likes losing their sales history on GTC listings, but eBay now has a real solution to the problem that doesn't involve goofy stuff like this.

Since most people search by price+shipping, this would put his listing at the end anyway, so what does it matter?

Stratocaster is a registered trade mark of Fender now located in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Every company's branded product names and "mascot characters" (Mr. Peanut) are registered trademarks owned by their respective companies. It's why you've never seen a Ford Corvette or a Ronald McDonald clown at In-N-Out Burger unless he's there for lunch.....

You've probably seen the fine print in magazine adds "trade marks are the property of their respective owners".

Further, patented products can't legally be reproduced  well except in foreign count where all the counterfeit come from - illegally made and illegally sold around the world.

Patents don't prevent you as an individual from producing a copy of the items for your own use. You can't legally sell that/those products. Technically I should not use the term products as it implies it's something ready to be purchased. Yes, that is taking the definition to a silly molecular level......

His listing will be at the end of regular search here thru price and shipping but his high selling number wil still be there doing it this way  and his overall position at watch count will stay high in the most watched and at others sites that offer similar type searches.   But if he ends his listing then he loses all that  position he built up. Same with best match, he would lose ground there too if he started over  with new listings.

Lots of people play this game to keep them high on the outside search engines.
