Slow Sales in January 2020

Just wondering how other sellers are doing. Our sales are very slow. With some unpaid auction items and really low offers. We sell mainly coins but we have some other accounts where we sell clothes and books and household items just a variety of things we do not need any longer. We just had an offer this morning for an item what is listed for 5.00 Dollars. We do not have any "Best Offer" Listings but from time to time we get someone what sends a message if we would take X amount for an item. This potential buyer offered 5.00 with free shipping. I tried to ship without tracking what opens us up to to much hassle  and getting dinged by ebay for shipping without tracking and I do realize other sellers offer free shipping but we are not able to do that . For us as sellers it is just not worth it, if I would add the shipping to the item and make it 8.99 free shipping they still would offer far less. We have the basic store so we pay for having the store the final fee the pay pal fee so for that item I would have maybe made less then a dollar if I would have taken his offer. We do realize they don't care from a selling point just for an item they want and get it at the best price. But for some low ball offers I much rather throw it away or donate the item. Just wondering how other sellers feel about it.

Hello.  Sales are horrible.  A regular trend now.   In my last 10 days = almost $43 US.  Going to add some new listings that might help.  We'll see!  I don't see it getting much better.  I do use best offer & had a $5 offer on an item posted for $85!  Person had 0 feedback.  Guess they will continue to have 0.  lol   Good luck!

After nearly 20 years ... Soooooooooo rediculously slow! Gets worse with each passing day. Pull items now & then, and just donate them. Sick of trying, and sick of wasting my time!

Kind of reminds me of My Space, it slowly withered away and then one day it was done.

Slow Sales in January 2020

The last week has been absolutely dead. I had a short stretch of very active sales about 2 weeks ago, but then back to lights out. I have stopped acquiring any more inventory, as it seems to high a risk to spend more money on items that will most likely just sit.

i do all i can do. promoted listings. free ship and free returns. run sales.... jump thru each and every hoop to no avail. not sure what to make of it.

For me, it has been the opposite way: My December was fabulous and in January, everything came to a screeching halt. I came back to eBay after being away for years and at first, in the hope the new CEO really cares about smaller sellers (and I still hold out hope on that). I had only 50 listings, Then eBay sent me 100 free listings, then another one. I still did not list more than 50 items with Fixed Price, and I believe that is why they gave me the free listings, in the hope that I would pay more in fees, because now, all FP listings automatically relist and if you do not catch it on time and end the listings, they (eBay) earn money. It is not in their interest that you sell your item right away, because if you do not, they can collect the extra relisting fees for a few months, before the item sells. Additionally, I do not participate in the Promo game, either, because that, also, would only make eBay's cash flow better, not mine. I feel the 20--24% we already have to pay for each sale in FV and payment processing etc. fees should be enough. Is this a bait and switch - or just the normal drop in sales after the holidays? Your guess is as good as mine...

Now I have arrived at a dilemma: I have enough inventory to list twice or three times of what I have now, but shall I bother with all the work, when sales are this slow? I have not tried Facebook yet, but was looking into it, per a friend's advice who is selling there pretty well. Hmm.

One thing I won't be doing is, to list items at 99 cents with FREE shipping, as I am selling genuine antique and vintage, and those items need to be presented to the serious buyer who knows quality, genuine vintage etc. and this takes time. I am also thinking about Pinterest and Twitter, something I have not used before. I will wait and see how February goes, before I make a decision on whether to list here more or not. But, because most buyers are also sellers, if many of them are struggling, no wonder very little is being sold, as one needs $$ as a seller to spend $$ as a buyer. The truth is, among all online venues (not counting the websites some own), the highest traffic comes to you on eBay - or at least that was the case before. I cannot list on the River, because that venue does not have an interest in genuine antique and vintage. But I heard their hand-made market is going pretty well.

Best of luck to you in the next month

PW

For some items that are just not worth the cost of shipping plus cost that would be the best practice for you to have.

Well GMV missed estimates for the fourth quarter, but thanks to all you folks that pay for promoted listings earnings beat and revenue was even.   eBay management blamed the GMV miss on the internet sales tax.

However, since they lowered all estimates for the first quarter 2020,  I would guess that January is not off to a stellar start.  They did reward their stockholders with a 2 cent increase in dividends and another share buyback program.

With three days remaining I'm down 48% from last year transactions.

CNBC was discussing eBay this evening.  It was pointed out that the stock price is the same as it was 2 1/2 years ago.  One analyst compared eBay to a melting ice cube.

Honestly, a lot of the incentive for hard work on eBay is gone, and I'm not surprised to see the drop at this point.

It used to be that hard work, keeping TRS, and following best practices was rewarded.

Nowadays, your hard work isn't rewarded. Non-TRS sellers with poor feedback are allowed (encouraged) to appear on top of search. You can put in effort and not see any growth. You follow best practices and eBay can't explain your drops, despite being cheaper and better offerings than the competitors. Meanwhile, competitors who don't follow best practices are on top of search.

Then all the tech issues causing problems. And policies that are unfair to sellers have been allowed for 1-2 years at this point with only minor changes, none making them significantly safer for sellers.

Another Q4 report has landed, and another GMV decline, 5% again. Considering how big eBay is, 5% is HUGE.

I just said it elsewhere earlier. If eBay returned to a system that was designed to REWARD sellers for hard work, you can bet a lot more people would be selling on eBay.

And if eBay returned to a system that actually rewarded sellers for doing a good job, and didn't put items from poor sellers who can't even keep TRS on top of search, then BUYERS would be in a much safer position to buy from eBay.

But instead, eBay is seemingly attempting to cash out by putting China sellers of poor goods on top of search, which only gives buyers red flags, and good honest sellers who take care of their customers are only seeing declines as their hard work goes unrewarded.

EBay needs to start actually taking action on the problems. They're driving sellers away, and driving buyers away, with their foolish business plan/policies that have been driving people away from eBay and causing declines for 2 years now.

2 years should be long enough to recognize the issue... I just worry at this point that eBay doesn't even understand the issue they're facing. Us sellers who are LIVING through it while trying to keep our doors open... we're the ones who get to see the problems first hand. Why won't they listen to anyone? Do they prefer running their site in to the ground?

My sales dipped every since I was forced into GTC 30 day sales. What a stupid move on eBay's part. Buyers buy often times on here today gone tomorrow impulse not "oh, I've got 30 days to think about it.

Yep...for one thing when GTC reups you are not on newly listed search. And if you dont want to pay or use your free listings you take them off before they ever reach to top of the page. Ive removed all my listings but 2 that are up for auction, after that Im outta here. Theres no money in it,theres alot of time in it...and you have to put up with Ebays policy dujour....which seldom helps and usually hurts sellers.
