Selling Collectables

Hi all. If I can, I like to find collectables and one of a kind items to sell. I recently found something that I feel would sell but here is my issue. The item is in the box and has been unopened. Many people like that and I do not want to open it. I want to list it as unopened. What if the buyer opens it? What if the item happens to have some damage that you could not see without removing it from the box or, because it is battery operated, does not function correctly? Am I still responsible for a return if the buyer complains? Do I have the right to say that, since it is unopened, I can not be responsible for damage I can not see? The box is perfect so there is no reason to think there would be anything wrong. But I know how people are and I know how EBay is these days.

Thanks. I guess opening it up is the proper thing to do. I doubt that anything I say in my listing would matter much. It's not that I feel as though it's okay to sell someone a defective item. Not at all. It's just that this isn't Wal-Mart where you can return something within 30 days. It's an auction sight. If I attend an auction in person and buy something that isn't quite what I thought it was, it's too bad for me.

No, this isn't Walmart - this is ebay, where anything, fixed price OR auction, can be returned for SNAD, or most any other reason.

Not saying 'NO' doesn't mean 'YES'.

The foolishness of one's actions or words is determined by the number of witnesses.

Perhaps if Brains were described as an APP, many people would use them more often.

Yeah, you learn pretty quickly on ebay what to do to get the least amount of complaints possible. I actually try to make my items sound worse than they actually are- just so people don't complain. When it comes to messages, you have to say things like : "I'm stupid. You're smart. I was wrong. You were right. You're the best. I'm the wrost. You're very good-looking. I'm not very attractive." It's fun stuff when it's not soul crushing.

Battery and charging stand included.

Okay, sounds good. So could the demonstration button be powered by the rechargeables themselves, thus showing that they're still holding their residual initial charge?

A lot of the items that have a "try me" function have a separate thing for that and the actual battery only works after you open the tem and remove the tab on the battery compartment.

While you are responsible, since this is a collectible toy, there is a chance that a collector will buy it and would display it in the box.  I bought a similiar collectible for an adult collector.  The item was an older item, and the test me feature didn't work.  The batteries had long since given up.  But for collecting purposes, it had never been out of the box, and wasn't going to be out now, so it was fine.

As a collectable I didn't want to open it. If I could have been sure that the buyer would just keep it as is I wouldn't have had to worry. But there's always that person that will purchase it for their kid or something and then, if it doesn't work, I'm stuck. So, I opened it. There are no lights. The turn signals, taillight and headlight are supposed to work. I found pieces of wire in the box and got to looking around. Underneath the fuel tank is where the circuit board is. Apparently, mice have gotten in it at some point and chewed some wiring. Someone good with electronics could probably repair it. But, I will have to list it as it is.

Insofar as batteries go, generally only the alkaline type tend to leak and destroy things, the old carbon zincs can stay intact for 100 years without leaking.

Rechargeables like the nickel metal hydride your machine has as the main power source usually have a year of storage before falling below operating voltage. Depending on age and quality of charger they may only be recoverable to a fraction of their capacity.

The remote says it has 6 "AA" but not what type? they are obviously still working but does not mean that they are not leaking, have you opened it up yet?

Mice/rodents have been known to chew on wiring but will definitely leave telltale signs of zillion.micro.poops, insects like cockroaches would be a better guess as I have seen entire televisions chewed up by them but see no brown roach stains.

If all that is wrong is the broken wiring then I agree the fix would be fairly simple but if the rechargeable battery pack is non-recoverable or any other electronic component damaged then as you said it should be sold as a display piece only.

My suggestion is to edit your listing from "Used" to "Parts not working". by listing as "used" you are telling the buyer that the machine is functional and open yourself up to an expensive free return shipping snad. Also, edit your title to say that it is non-working parts only.

Or, since I am only 7 hours away stop by with a case of beers and I'll resolder those wires for you free of charge.

Just looked and see that listing category doesn't have the "Parts Not working" available, which make even more sense to edit your title to say exactly that. Aso dump all that fluffernutter text wall and get right to the point - nobody reads anymore... scrap that feedback and insurance snark too as both are worthless to buyers.
