Seller unresponsive

Hi everyone,

A while back I sold an item through Ebay. I shipped it out after getting paid. Recently, the item was returned because she never picked up the item from where she wanted it delivered. I have tried reaching out to her but she has never replied. The money has been transferred from Ebay to my bank account in the meanwhile. How do I move forward? Thanks

@massimcatarinell-0 You did your part as the seller so nothing else for you to do at this point. Buyer purchased, seller shipped, buyer didn't pick up, item returned to seller, seller notified buyer but received no response.

Per eBay policy buyer has no MBG because they failed to pick up the item. Should the buyer contact you than you should refund the purchase minus the shipping & fees. If you don't hear back then the money is yours. Nothing else for you to do but wait and see if buyer ever replies to you.

How about differentiating between a buyer and a seller, are you the buyer or the seller?

I wouldn't do anything until the BUYER contacts you.

You can cancel the sale and refund buyer stating "something wrong with buyer's address"

Thanks for the elaborate answer. Would it be ok to relist the item or would that be unethical? If the original buyer would show up, I could always refund like you said no?

If you originally sent the item to the address given at checkout, I would advise the buyer that the item has been return by the carrier and request that they advise you on how they wish to proceed.  I would then secure the customer's property and await a reply.

If the buyer replies you will need to determine if they are willing to pay to have it reshipped or if they want to cancel the transaction.  If they want to cancel, I believe that you can deduct the cost of the original shipping if it was billed as a separate line item, but not if you used free shipping.

If the buyer fails to reply, after keeping the item secure for the amount of time your state deems to be the amount of time unclaimed items are considered abandoned, you can then dispose of it as you see fit.  Keeping the money that has been paid as compensation for storing the item.

Of course, if the buyer later makes contact and gives you what you believe is a reasonable explanation as to why it was abandoned, you can refund the buyer as you see fit.

I wouldn't make multiple attempts to contact the buyer.  Just one time through eBay messages and maybe one email if you have their email through the order details.  Once you've sent those, sit back and wait.  The ball is in their court.

Why would you want to do that?  The OP has been paid and the customer's property has been shipped to them.  It is not the seller's fault that the buyer failed to take delivery when it was there for them to do so.  The ball is in the buyer's court once the seller has sent them word of the item being returned at their last known email or eBay message location.  It is time to sit back, secure the customer's property and let them make the next move.

@massimcatarinell-0 That would be fine and not unethical because the original sale was technically completed. You did your part and are considered done. You got it correct, if buyer ever replies back to you just refund the portion required and be done.

If you relist the item, which I hope you do, and buyer replies to you before it sells again, than you have the option to tell them to simply purchase anew. Either way you will be fine and are doing the correct thing.

I see that you're located in the Netherlands.  Is it a possibility that the buyer failed to pick the item up because they didn't wish to pay duty on it from Customs?  Was it an international shipment outside of the EU?
