Scammers!!

I’ve been selling on eBay a month & have already had at least 8 scammers try to scam me!! Anyone else have this problem? I mean, it’s like 2 per week. They’ll send me an offer or accept my price and then at bottom, they’ll say something like “kindly accept my offer but text me on this number (then give phone number) so I can pay you immediately” Then, eBay holds my “earnings” accountable for these fraudulent buys that eBay would HAVE to know the actual sell & payment were neveR made!!  How do I stop these scammers and how can I get eBay to take this ridiculously outrageous amount off my earnings? Do they seriously NOT monitor sales? ????

Re: Scammers!!

I've been selling for so long that I don't get the 'kindly accept my offer' Offers. The best way you can protect yourself is to NOT ACCEPT the Offers. The scammers won't pay you... they won't even appear to if you've caught on. It's simply tying up your inventory for days, and Unpaid Item Cases take more days. Also, never text. You'll drive yourself crazy. It's so hard to be a new seller on eBay. Good luck!

Re: Scammers!!

As a newbie seller, you are a scam magnet. When you are not paid in forty eight hours, file an unpaid item dispute. When you close it,in five more days, you will be credited with the final value fees. The best way to weed out these scammers is to list with fixed price, immediate payment required, then your listing wont close if you are not paid, it weeds out a lot of scammers.

Re: Scammers!!

To help avoid these guys, take Best Offer off the listings, and then sell fixed price with Immediate Payment Required.

Set up your Buyer Requirements at their strictest levels.

Put the scammers on your Block list.

Try selling your lower cost items first to help you build up feedback. Save your higher priced items for later. Being a new seller with pricey items can make you a target, altho i see one of the scammers went for the $20 infant shoes. They normally go for computers, smartphones and other high dollar items. (The guy with the shoes may have been going to ask you to put gift cards in with the item, another popular scam.)

Very glad you recognized these scams for what they are. Best of luck to you moving forward!!

Re: Scammers!!

It's too bad that ebay won't let members report the messages from the message box itself. Then, if ebay did anything at all, they could stop the fraud cold and delete the scammer after seeing the message first hand.

@lcwalker_03   The only way to stop this is to list as FIXED PRICE IPR.  The item then remains for sale until paid for.

1) You should list it as a Fixed Price immediate payment required, only NO auctions and NO best offers

To have the immediate payment required option you will need to use this listing form and check the IPR box:

https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/listings/listing-tips/using-advanced-listing-form?id=4159&st=2&pos...

2) If you have offers from suspicious buyers then add them to your blocked buyer list:

https://offer.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?BidderBlockLogin

3) If a bad buyer won an item and has not paid then after 48 hours from close of sales file an unpaid item case to get your sellers fees back and give the non payer a strike on their account.   At least 96 hours after you open the case you must return and close it as not paid to get your fees back

https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/getting-paid/resolving-unpaid-items-buyers?id=4137&st=3&pos=1&quer...

4) Have you set up your account blocks:

Go to My eBay > Account > Site Preferences or Seller Hub > Shortcuts > Site preferences.

Set up your buyer requirements:

Have received 2 Unpaid Item strike(s) within 12 Month(s)
Have a primary shipping address in a location I don't ship to
Have a feedback score of -1 or lower
Are currently winning or have bought 5 of my items in the last 10 days and have a feedback score of 5 or lower

Get rid of the Make Offer option and list it as Fixed Price for the amount you want to get for it. Set the Immediate Payment Required option in the listing form when you upload the listing (it's a checkbox on the full listing form), and that way no one can snatch your item off the market without actually paying you for it first.

If you're a low-feedback seller with high-priced items, you will unfortunately be a magnet for scammers like this. Start with low-risk items and purchases of your own to build your feedback count.

They used to have this option but ebay removed it for whatever reason.

Removing these bad buyers from the site though is futile since they just open new accounts or buy using a guest account.

Re: Scammers!!

Haha! You’re right!! The very first sell I made was the $45 helmet. I was so green that I actually text the number, ONCE!! They did ask for $300 in eBay gift cards to be sent with the item, but wanted pics of the cards, SCRATCHED OFF, (they prob thought I was stupid enuf to text them, why not take a shot I was stupid enuf to do that? Lol)  They Sent me an email from “paypal”, only it wasn’t the real paypal, it was a fake paypal but to an inexperienced seller, it looked pretty real. I figured it out tho. How do make it Immediate Payment Required?

Re: Scammers!!

It will come up after you click fixed price.

Re: Scammers!!

I’ve reported almost all of them, I’ve learned it isn’t worth my time. They still haven’t credited the non sells to my earnings. They did refund 1 fee. And, know good & well no payment has been made within 3 days so not sure why eBay doesn’t take care of it right then & there!
