Scammers getting creative

So I got a message through eBay's system a few minutes ago from someone claiming they'd purchased an item from me but received the wrong item. The item in question was delivered almost a month ago and knowing this I checked the details of the sale and the item was sold to a completely different user than the one who messaged me. The username on the sale isn't even close to the one claiming they received the wrong item and the person who contacted me has zero feedback and has only been a member since Mid-September which is after the item was sold. I'm not sure how they're doing this through eBay's messaging system but I responded to let them know I'd be reporting them to eBay. This makes me wonder what they would have done if I'd fallen for their scam because if I'd sent a refund it would have been sent to the person who actually purchased the item. Has anyone else had one of these?

This has been going on for a long time. Scammer peruses the sold listings and in a lame attempt tries to get seller to issue a refund, but you cant issue a refund to them because it is not on their account on the sold data from ebay. Dumb scammer.

No, I've never gotten one.

 

If someone didn't receive the correct item they should open an item not as described case within the correct time period (30 days or less after receipt of the item), get their prepaid return label, return the incorrect item and get a refund.   Never, EVER just refund on someone's word.

The easier you are to offend the easier you are to control.

They are just trying to see if you are a seller that reflexively may just do quick refunds and not check details.

My first inclination was to tell them to return the item but then I started snooping and that's when I discovered they weren't the original buyer.

That doesn't make sense. because why would the scammer supposedly do that anyway when we don't have a choice in where the refunds get sent.? also its possible the buyer has 2 accounts and reached out to you on the wrong account of there's.

I wondered the same thing (refund would go to the original buyer). The only thing I could figure was if they did this to a newer seller who isn't savvy maybe they'd have asked for the refund to be sent some via some other method (with some weird excuse). I had a scammer ordeal when I was new but it was nothing like this and I caught that one before anything bad happened. Additionally, I've never had an item like the one they claimed I sent them.

How do you know it isn't the same buyer reaching out with a different ID?  Most sellers have at least 2 ID's, one for buying.  Some buyers only have multiple ID's & they may have just reached out with the 'wrong' ID.  I've certainly had buyers do that before, though not for this specific reason.

I would not have responded at all.  If they continue to hassle me, I will have told them that I don't discus private information.  As they are not the buyer.  You have to be polite, but firm.

Maybe they're just a lousy scammer:

 

"Yeah, imma accuse this seller of shipping me the wrong item, and then they'll knee jerk refund me! Derrr...."

There is no honest reason to have two IDs. Amazon knows this. I wish ebay would wake up. Policies and consequences for breaking them make zero difference where anyone can just open another account.

For everything that happens conditions exist such that nothing else could have happened.

I had no idea Amazon banned more than one account under the same persons name identifiers, why then does Ebay not do this?

That’s just screwed up. You can’t issue a refund on the selling page to a different ID.

So ask them for the identifiers from their other account and have them tell you what their name address is. Ask them if they have made a mistake confusing their accounts. Tell them you can only issue a refund from the original purchase ID.
