So, today I had to cancel a sale of a piece of artwork because it was a scammer that made the offer. Besides losing a half days work because I had to get it packaged at the UPS store, I also lost potential legitimate sales because after I accepted the offer, the item was marked as sold. It had only been posted 24 hours and I already had quite a bit of interest. In addition, I had paid to promote the item. I received an email later in the day indicating that the ebay user had been compromised and they were attempting to clear this account. The sale was fraudulent. Great. So then I had manually relist the item and pay the promotional fee again. Trust no one! This buyer had 87 positive feedbacks and no negative. Had I not received the email from ebay, I would have had no way of knowing this was not a legitimate offer. This is very scarey as it was a $1000 piece of artwork.

Was the sale cancelled by Ebay? You are charged fees only if the buyer pays and if there is a refund, the fees are returned except 30 cents. LOOK at your account tomorrow and see if you were charged the promo fee. It did not sell so how could they charge you the fee. Anyway, if the item is packed, you saved time and it's ready to go when it does sell. Please remember that if it sells for $750.oo or higher , you MUST ADD SIGNATURE CONFIRMATION for seller protection and YOU pay for it.

Sorry to hear that happened to you. Good thing you where alerted by eBay regarding the compromised buyer account.
Just an FYI all buyers have positive feedback. eBay took away negative and neutral feedback for buyers in 2008.

Hopefully you were not charged the promotion fees.
All other fees are refunded including the .30 if you have to cancel in full.
If you were charged the promotion fees you should call and get those reimbursed.

As a new seller, the old saying goes here is that you should sell only items you are prepared to lose. Anyone here would tell you this. Yet I have been here selling for over 23 years with over several million in sales(under a different ID). There are ways to reduce your risk in selling here. Understand what you can control as a business operating here and what you cannot. I might suggest you only sell smaller-priced items until you learn the ropes. Understanding what eBay will and will not do to protect you as a seller. If you need help with anything, this is a good place to come to. You are welcome to message me for some tips that I have learned over the last 23 years. I wish you all the luck.

When I issue refunds, a subsequent reversal of promotional fees occurs on the amount of the refund. So if I paid 1.50 to promote, I might see 0.25 come back if I refund some postage (that's usually why I'm refunding, the shopping cart is not user friendly).

Had I been in your position I would have actually not considered this a scam but a good thing. Based on a number of postings on this forum the seller has already shipped the item before eBay ever gets around to notifying the seller there are issues with the buyers account. I for one am glad to see eBay at least starting to make some effort in curtailing some of the potential scamming.
