I do not have a sales tax number. When I purchase from a tax state, I don't see the sales tax applied. Are the sellers paying that later? As a seller and as I am from a state that is now starting to collect the tax, am I responsible for the sales tax later on?

eBay is collecting the tax for you and submitting it to the buyers' states.

So if I buy something from a tax state and the tax is not collected at that time, does Ebay deduct from the seller's proceeds?

No if tax is not collected at the time of sale then it apparently is not LAW yet that internet sales tax be collected. They are slowly rolling out the e commerce sales tax states.

On Oct 1 eBay begins collecting and remitting applicable sales tax to your state.
As a buyer you'll be charged sales tax on all your purchases from now on no matter where the seller is from.
As a seller you don't have to worry about the sales tax. If your buyer is in a state that collects tax eBay will collect and remit it.

If you bid on an auction, how do you know if tax will be added?

So you won't know until after the auction? Or you just assume that the sales tax will be collected and bid accordingly. But as the previous poster said, it is not enforced yet. So I don'r really know if it is added. In fact, I won an auction today and no tax was added, but my state was added today.

eBay has been behind in implementing some states. Could it be a tax exempt item?
I would assume from now on that you will be taxed on taxable items.
