What, exactly, is the sales tax application & do I really need it? I have been charged $189 for it. That seems like a lot of money for a new (again) seller!

What sales tax application are you talking about? The buyer pays sales tax.

who charged you for a sales tax application? II don't think its required.....

Think I found the site: sales tax application dot net - this site is for-profit and not a requirement to sell on eBay. I am still trying to figure out what all they sell you for the $189+...
And at the very bottom of the page did you read the following:
Copyright © 2022 Sales Tax Application Organization. This is a private non-governmental website. All rights reserved.

That's a complete scam site. ALL of those registrations can be done directly with the State tax authority FOR FREE.
For the average eBay seller the only thing that would be of interest would be for their own State and primarily so they could buy merchandise for resale without paying Sales Tax (even on eBay). That would require one form that you can fill out in minutes and submit online FOR FREE.

I agree. They are selling a service you can do yourself, and for less money.
lol! Not required in Oregon at all!

@slippinjimmy is correct that a sales tax license is something a seller would choose to apply for & purchase so that THEY can purchase items for resale, tax-free. It is NOT required, but if you live in a state that you shop in for inventory a lot, it may make sense for you.
It makes a lot of sense for me & it is NOT free in my state. Jimmy may be correct that it's free to apply, but in my state if you're granted one, you pay $20 every 2 years for it. Each state would be different. I can't imagine a state charging $189 for it. It's also often called a "resellers permit". It is NOT a requirement, it is for your own benefit, if you want one.
Who charged you $189?
ETA: If you apply for one with your state ( not some scam website), it will also likely trigger a requirement for you to FILE a sales tax return with your state, anywhere from monthly to once a year. This is often true DESPITE the fact that Ebay now collects sales tax for almost all states.

Thank you. I will do some research & see if I can get a refund.

Yes I have done that. I have no idea where this registration popped up but it was while I was getting ready to sell, going thru all kinds of eBay information & printing it. I should have waited & checked it out. That was dumb on my part. There is a phone # I can call & hopefully, get this all straightened out & receive a refund. Thanks for your reply.
