Retrieving Sold Items

I just started selling misc. items other than books, yet I still have been using the alphabetical system for retrieving the items once sold. I like this method, but am seeking alternatives.

I'd like to use something like an 'listing date' to retrieve items, but that date seems to disappear once the item sells. I like this method because it limits my search to about 20-25 items, which I list at most on any given day.

I know there is an item number, but that wouldn't seem to help me locate the item.

Any suggestions?

I am not sure exactly what you mean by "The alphabetical system for retrieving items". 

eBay provides a space for a "custom label" on every listing, I use that to categorize and search for my items.

I have about 1,000 stored items seperated by box size.  The shipping label tells me the box size so I know what pallet it is on.   If it's an unusal box size it's even easier to find.   If you open the listing page the date it was created can be found at the top of the page under listing info start time.
