I opened an unpaid item case after not being able to get any response from the buyer to my messages. Now the buyer paid and sent me a nasty message. I just know this person is going to leave me bad FB. Anything that can be done to stop a buyer like this from leaving purely retaliatory FB?

I'm afraid not. You might get lucky and call eBay and get a sympathetic agent IF they leave you bad feedback. Note that they can also abuse the returns system and eventually get your item for free.
What I would try (some may think this as underhanded) is to keep communicating with the buyer. It's tricky, but basically try to get them to incriminate themselves in messages. I've successfully done that a few times... like finally getting the buyer admitting he will give me negative feedback if I don't ...
That way I can save that extortion message for if I need to use it. Maybe you can get them to admit to abusing the returns too. Like I said though, it's tricky to pull this off. Kinda like inception.... ooooooooooooo 👻

They may or may not leave negative FB. If they do, it really isn't a big deal anymore as to your standing with ebay. You are no longer rated on your FB score. Just leave a factual non-retalitory reply about what happened. "Buyer became upset when an unpaid item case was initiated."
Have you tried sending a nice but brief reply, explaining the process? I had a person once become unhappy with me for opening a case. I don't recall very getting negative FB on it but I do recall writing them, explaining how it works. Sometimes they think doing so will hurt their account so explain that it does not unless they didn't pay. It is ebay's system to remind buyers to make payment. Or just let it go and see what happens.

Yes I answered very politely that I had received no response to my messages, thought they had changed their mind, and needed to clear the transaction, so I could relist.
They paid, and sent me a nasty message about me “threatening “ them with UPI case. What a load of malarkey.

Probably not. One of my only 2 or 3 negatives that stuck was exactly this scenario. No reply whatsoever to a couple of invoices and a couple of reminders (over a 2 week period), so I finally had to open the UID, and the buyer IMMEDIATELY paid and neg.d with something about "poor communication". eBay would not remove it.

Sigh...I just really hate this, all the buyer had to do was say “yes I will pay today, tomorrow, next week”! I wouldn’t have minded waiting, we’re talking about a $20 sale for Pete’s sake!

What I meant by writing them was to explain how the unpaid item process works. Sometimes that will alleviate any tension as some buyers are unaware that this will not hurt their ebay account at all unless they do not pay.

Your buyer paid, and then left a neg?
I thought that when a member loses a Dispute (in this case by not paying when the UID is open) that he cannot leave feedback of any sort.
And that feedback mentioning the Dispute* can also be removed by eBay.
*Your customer complained about communication, not the Dispute.

Not knowing the precise wording of the message to which you didn't receive a reply, it is hard to know if that message could easily have been taken as some sort of threat.
I ordinarily am not too quick to open a UID. I think 48 hours is a tad too short a time. Of course, if the buyer pays I immediately close the UID, ship and thank them for their business. Unfortunately, some buyers take opening a UID to be some sort personal insult.
Alas! As has already been stated, the buyer can leave whatever kind of feedback he wishes. Depending upon its wording it may or may not qualify for removal.

Well, he did pay, just as soon as I opened the dispute. Once he's paid, he can leave f/b.
The only communication I had with him was payment related - a couple of invoices, and a payment reminder, which elicited no reply or response from him whatsoever. Several days later he paid and neg.d with that comment within 10 minutes of opening the UID, so it's pretty obvious whatever set him off was in the commuication eBay sent with the UID. I did call CS on it, they would not remove it.

Keep in mind that it is possible all this manipulation and what probably looks like nagging to the buyer could be what pushes him to leave the neg when he might not have been planning to in the first place.

Nope. Feedback is blocked when the UID is CLOSED with nonpayment. Just opening it does not prevent feedback if the buyer pays before the seller can close it.

The UID closes automatically upon payment. The seller doesn't have the option to leave it open or manually close it anymore once payment has been made.
Unless you are getting paid by check/money order/some other form of payment that doesn't go through eBay's checkout.
