Hi There,
A buyer wanted to return an item for no other reason except they changed there mind. I said they could return the item if they paid the return shipping cost. I asked them to open a return through the ebay system. Instead they opted to just purchase a label themselves and return the item. If I refund the buyer in FULL, will ebay still credit my account for the my seller final value fees associated with the sale, even though the buyer did not open a return request through ebay?

Here is the eBay page about fee credits.
(I found it by using the Help & Contact link at the top of any eBay page and typing credits into the search box).

It says that if you voluntarily initiate a refund on eBay then you get a fee credit for the final value fee but not to the 30 cent fixed fee. The statement does not indicate that the buyer needs to formally file a return.

You know, I don't think they will refund your FVFs, if your buyer didn't open a Return through eBay. After all, eBay doesn't know why you're refunding. (You might be able to deduct the fees from the refund, but I'd let the customer know why.)
It could be that the buyer has abused the Return system and took this tack. Good luck.

What if they cancelled and refunded as buyer requested? That should get the fees back without a return. But I think the buyer needs to confirm that they received the refund.

you can cancel after receiving item (full refund and you lose shipping money one way) . Or you can refund partially if you wish as ebay now does prorate final fees.

^^^ Interesting thought. You know, if the buyer has shipped it back, that would be doable. ... Right?? Anyone??
Edit to add: I think the refund (through a cancellation) would show that the buyer did receive a refund, no?

Not sure on the cancellation if the buyer needs to do anything in this situation or not. They may, since no return was filed.
Lucky provided a good link above for the OP.

You will get credit on the return. If buyer already paid for the return label and have already send it back. Just wait for the item to be return to you, once that happens. Go to "Orders", "Paid and Shipped", find item, "Send Refund".
Don't ask them to "Open a Return on ebay", because ebay will generate a label and you will have to pay for it.
