Receiving a lot of non-paying buyers...

I am kind of wondering if there is some trend going on with this. I've sold on here for almost 10 years on and off and in the past it was very rare to not receive payment. In the past few months it has happened to me 4 times.

I was selling a used phone and had three buyers purchase and not pay before a fourth finally paid. The same recently happened with a collectible that I sold. What's odd is these are all buy it now/best offer and all were from buyers with feedback, not brand new accounts. I don't understand why someone would buy something buy it now and then not pay. I could see maybe bidding on an auction and forgetting, but why purchase an item and not pay?

Receiving a lot of non-paying buyers...

Hi, i set all my listings for fixed price with the Immediate Payment Required setting turned on. I don’t take offers which enables the non-payers to get their foot in the door.

Oh, and i have my Buyer Requirements set at the strictest settings. BR can slow the tide of non-payers by blocking those users with two or more non-payment strikes against them. Link below with more information.

I had no idea there was a feature to require immediate payment! That is fantastic, I will definitely turn that on. In the past I was willing to allow people a day or two if they needed time but at this point my experience has been either they pay immediately or not at all.

In addition to the great advice above ^^^^

Is the non-payment occurring when they do a Best offer?  We have had a "rash" of those lately also.  Unfortunately, currently, there is no way on a Best Offer to force immediate payment.  E-Bay appears to be working on this, but evidently it will be early 2022 before it is rolled out.

Make sure you put these non-payers on your BBL and if you can, check your Unpaid Item Dispute settings to be certain these non-payers get a strike for non-paying.

Go to your Selling Preferences, click on Blocked Buyer List and add them to it.

Under All Listings, Click on Preferences for Items Awaiting Payment - set to the lowest setting if desired.

You can also set up your Best Offer option to automatically reject offers that are too low and to automatically accept offers that are acceptable.

The fast response to an acceptable Best Offer encourages fast payment.

If the customer uses BO however, Immediate Payment Required is not in play.

@elegantepilogue Here is the link about how to set up Immediate Payment on your listings. Good luck!

Yes, we have been getting about 3 out of 5 people not paying lately, we use best offer on everything but that has not been a problem up until the last month or so, we generally just send a message asking for a response to pay and it seems to help sometimes, not sure what is going on but it does get annoying having to block so many people.

Ah okay, I may have to stop accepting best offers then. That is strange if it's not compatible with requiring immediate payment. Regardless of the price I accept I would want immediate payment, especially if I took less than I was asking I would not want to wait a week to get paid.

I immediately accepted a recent best offer when it was received and the buyer did not pay for a week... I relisted and they bought it a second time and have not paid still for a day now. I am thinking I may have to start blocking.

@elegantepilogue

>I may have to stop accepting best offers then.

You can use eBay's mania for "Best Offers" to your advantage, whether you list with auction or BIN.

1> In the Selling Details section of the listing form click on the Best Offer click box

2> Just below that you will see two click boxes marked "Automatically accept offers of at least" and "Automatically decline offers lower than"

3> Click both these boxes and enter your lowest acceptable price in both

Now if a buyer makes a lowball offer, it gets automatically rejected and you will never get a notice or email. If the buyer makes an offer equal to or higher than your lowest price, it will get accepted and the item will close the same way as if the buyer did a BIN. And you don't have to be bothered with all the back-and-forth offers and eBay can't sneak in a BO without your knowledge. You might even get lucky as has happened to me now and then and the BO will be above your lowest price. I list auctions only but it works fine for me. It still can't stop nagging emails from problematic buyers, but that's what your BBL is for.

With Best Offers  there is no reason to think the seller will be at her desk when the Offer comes in

And with Auctions that the buyer will be available *when the Auction ends.

So making an Immediate Payment would not always be possible.

Remember that eBay runs 24/7 and some members sleep, eat and have responsibilities.

*Because most bidder are using automatic bidding- bidding their maximum and letting it ride.
