I sold an item for Parts Only because it did not work. The total deal with shipping was under $ 30.00. The Buyer apparently tried to fix it, couldn't then decided to return it. I accept returns but typically I don't get things back that I've sold for Parts Only. They basically changed their mind because they could not fix it ... in looking at the automatic return below can I assume the Buyer will buy their own label and ship it back? I know on another return I had an option to send a pre-printed label to a Buyer but not on this one ... has something changed and eBay just sends them a label deducting the cost from my account an not bothering to tell me?
Next question of course would be say I get the thing back in pieces or damaged worse then when I sent it in the first place ... at that point can I refuse the refund? Just curious, this Buyer may purchase from me again in the future based on what the item is ...

What I'm reading is a normal buyer's remorse.
You accept returns?
How long?
14 days? 30?
If it's within that time schedule, the functionality would be irrelevant (imo)

The buyer pays for the label since it’s a remorse return and you don’t offer free returns. You can ask eBay to step in if the buyer returns something else or the original item with additional damage or missing pieces but eBay will probably refund the buyer anyway 😞

For future, you might want to make for-parts-not-working listings non returnable.

Ebay has a category called for parts and salvage ,any item listed in that category is not expected to work.
if you have listed in that category, rules are different

you can still file item not as described,if seller shipped an entirely different item, say I am expecting motherboard and seller shipped a comic book
Or buyer lied and said so,who knows who is telling the truth?

The buyer can still file a SNAD complaint, return the item on the seller's dimes, and get a 100% refund.

Yes, I was thinking that might be the best approach ... sure they can still process a SNAD but again, this return is unusual ... anyway, thanks for that advice.

But isn't there also something about not tinkering around with someone's item if you are going to return it? I mean if he tried to fix it, it might be worse off than it was.

Since the buyer stated "Changed mind" they automatically have to pay for the return. Once your tracking shows that it is delivered to you, you have a couple of days to submit a refund for the cost of the item only. No shipping. If the item is sent back in worse shape then you sent it. It's not worth the fight for a few bucks.

That's what I thought too about the label on this one. I am pretty confident the original item will be returned but I am a bit fearful they may have made it worse by taking it apart and trying to get it to work, we'll see ... as usual I will probably post an update once the item is returned.
Thank you for the reply.

Based on a number of posts, eBay still tends to do refunds on your dime even if you don't offer refunds. Everyone agrees to the Money Back Guarantee.

Ah, good to know I will only have to refund the item cost and not shipping ... should be able to relist, resell and recover the lost sale ... who knows, maybe I'll take a whack at fixing it myself ...

eBay hides this one:
When an item is returned to the seller
The buyer must return the item in the same condition in which it was received.
Buyers are liable for any loss in value of the item if this loss in value is attributed to a handling which is not necessary for the purpose of checking the quality, characteristics and functioning of the item. The seller will deduct the amount of loss from the amount reimbursed to buyer.
