I'm a very basic/newbie seller. I am given 50 free listings per month. Does that mean at any given time I can only have 50 listings on my profile? Or Every month I can list 50 new items and they can accumulate without fees? so in 2 months I can have 100 total and 4 months 200 and so on without having to pay for additional listings?

The 50 free you get is per month, not accumulative. This means anything over the 50 you will pay insertion fees on. You can only have 50 items listed free.

1) Every calendar month, on the 1st, at 12:00:00AM your account will be given 50 free listing slots.
2) Those 50 slots can be used for auctions or good-until-cancelled (aka GTC) fixed price listings.
3) Those auction and GTC listings can be new, sell-similar, or relists.
4) GTC listings will **automatically** relist every month unless you cancel them before their relist date. Those auto-relists will count against your 50 listing slots.
5) If you do not use all 50 slots in a calendar month, those unused slots will vanish. Unused slots do not accumulate.
6) From time to time, you **may** receive promotions from eBay that give you extra listing slots for a limited amount of time (usually less than a week). These extra-listing promotions will appear in your My eBay or Seller Hub in the Promotions section.

No, it doesn't mean either of those things.
Each month you get 50 free basic insertions which can be used either for new listings or for renewing older listings. If you have more than 50 new or renewed listings in one month, you will be billed for an insertion fee of 35 cents each.
Fixed price listings are called "Good until canceled" because they will automatically roll over every month unless the item is sold or you cancel the listing. When a fixed price listing renews, it uses up one of your free insertions if available; otherwise, you'll be billed for the regular insertion fee.
