I accidentally accepted a return by just clicking on the page trying to scroll down. Boom, it said I accepted the return!!?? I didn't mean it!!! Buyer ordered by mistake but he filed as "item doesn't work or defective". Buyer agreed to pay return shipping but was still able to return with a prepaid return label due to eBay's treacherous setup.
I thought there ought to be a "confirm" submit button before accepting a return or issue a refund. I don't want to chance another "issue refund" button without knowing what follows. Does it give me selections like "Full Refund", "parcial refund" or "Refund minus shipping cost"? Or it just automatically issue the Full Refund? Please help! I am trying reducing the loss on top of already unfair unjustified return. The item is delivered back to me. Now it's time to issue the refund but I only want to issue refund minus shipping cost as agreed.
First time I have to deal with this. Our other issues have been simpler.

If the buyer filed as defective, then that is SNAD. Seller pays return shipping in that case.

You could appeal to buyer to cover shipping cost, but ebay will not force him to and you cannot charge him for it unless he agrees.
If he does, then just send a money request through paypal.

So I can not simply issue refund minus shipping cost after clicking "Issue Refund"? or I have to ask eBay to step in by clicking "I don't agree with buyer's reason for return"? Buyer's narration and photos he provided show that he ordered by mistake despite our clear description, even though he never answered our repeated questions of what model of his device.
He could have easily sold himself (he is a seller too) maybe even with a profit (The trend price went up right after we sold to him). But he insisted on returning even willing to pay for shipping.
We are occasional seller with small volume. One return can cause enormous rate rate and a big ding in our performance rating.

Who pays for shipping is determined by how buyer files case.
If it were for remorse, then yes you could have deducted for shipping.
If he files SNAD, then you are responsible.
Do not ask ebay to step in, it never ends well for the seller.
Like I said all you can do is appeal to the buyer to pay for shipping.

I should have asked him to close the original incorrect filing and reopen with return with "order by mistake". Before I could research in full I clicked the page and "accepted" the return against my will. I was not familiar with return as a buyer either so I didn't know there are so many choices for return. I hardly ever filed for return. If the items received are no longer needed, I just sell them. Sometimes you make some sometimes you lose some.

There is only one bite at the return apple.
The buyer wouldn't be able to close the SNAD and open a remorse.
All you can do is report the buyer or abusing the MBG after you issue the return.

Make sure you block him from ever buying from you again.
