Priced too high

I've been selling mail order books for about 15 years longer than eBay has existed...  Before the internet, we sold by catalog and magazine ads...  After the internet came to be, we (of course) got our own web site, and we're doing well until eBay, Amazon and other giant monopolies came to be, and then we found our search engine placement waning so we decide "if you can't beat them, join them"  (like so many other businesses)...  So in 2004 we joined eBay, and didn't sell much until a few years ago we decided to get an ebay store and go about it in a larger capacity...  We've already experienced eBay's selling limits and have had them increased to a level we'll likely not exceed...

Today I came across another form of eBay discrimination...  Selling a specific book for too much regardless of our competition selling it for more... Today I decided to raise the price of a book we sell because it had gone out of print and I noticed that all our competition was selling it for more...  When I tried to increase the price of the item I got the "selling limit" notice and I wasn't allowed to continue without calling eBay... When I called eBay I was asked what the price of the item was, and when I asked what difference that made I was told "for the good of the eBay community" I wouldn't be allowed to raise the price...  Most of our eBay sales are for out of print (NOS New Old Stock) books so we seldom sell a book for the publishers recommended price...

Here we sit, we pay for a store, but we're not allowed to price our books as we see fit...  Is there something I'm missing, how can this policy possibly be good for anyone...  And how can one seller be allowed to sell their books for more than another seller?

I don't get it...

Something doesn't seem right there

Why not just remove the listing and make a new listing at the higher price then.

Maybe ebay won't allow you to raise the price while it's listed.  I've raise the price of items that didn't sell, and they sold faster at the higher price!  Ebay never tried to stop me.  If you spoke with a dozen different ebay CS, you'd probably get at least a dozen different answers!

I'm curious.  When you look at your seller dashboard under "monthly limits", does it show that you've reached your limit (either on dollar amount or listed & sold items)?

This is why ↑. You have reached (one of) your selling limits.

There are category limits as well as overall limits. More information:

eBay reps have been known to give incorrect information, but since we can't know what the entire conversation was, there is no way to know why. eBay does advise sellers to lower their prices in order to make a sale, but they don't dictate what the prices are.
