Poor coding an annoying waste of time

Checking my calendar - is this 2019 or 1995? Effective coding, anyone?

I HATE wasting time! It’s my biggest bugaboo!

1. Customer buys item and points out a recent change of address.

2. I get ready to ship and note she hasn’t updated either PayPal or EBay, so new addy isn’t protected.

3. I send nice note.

4. She updates PayPal.

Honestly, some of these policies I just live with, I don’t tilt at windmills.

All’s right with the world, yes? ......NOT!

5. PayPal does not retroactively update addresses.

6. Call PayPal. System does not allow CS to even see the new customer address, much less verify I can safely ship to it AS THE CUSTOMERS CORRECT ADDRESS.

6. Eye roll. Refund payment.

7. Email customer thru EBay. Explain situation to customer and request she pay again.

8. No can do. Item still shows as paid on EBay.

9. Call EBay. CS changes payment status.

All’s right with the world, yes? ......NOT!

10. The notation on EBay now reads “You have marked this not paid, but payment was made thru PayPal.”

11. No “Payment reminder” button returns.

12. Call EBay back. CS informs the payment reminder NEVER returns if you refund.

13. Go back to PayPal. Use transaction details page to find customer email and manually send s money request, also with an explanation.

All’s right with the world, yes? ......NOT!

14. Receive EBay message from buyer - this is too much hassle, she’s really disappointed, it’s clearly not meant to be.

Face/Palm.

I have now wasted about an hour on an otherwise lovely Saturday morning.

And PayPal keeps their transaction fee.

And an originally bouncy and friendly customer has turned pissy. And essentially announced the decision to not pay.

Face/Palm once more for good measure.

See? I’m not always an EBay cheerleader. I just think poor workability of the platform is a much bigger problem than Cassini algorithms and imaginary plots to hide listings.

I just wasted an hour ($40) and looks like I’ve also lost the $35 sale I was trying to protect for the customer’s sake.

I should have just shipped to the address of record - I’d be protected and she’d have been out of luck if it wasn’t forwarded.

I know the coding ability exists to facilitate this.

Pffffffffft!

The addresses in the PayPal addressbook never show up in eBay.

Go ahead: Add a new, fictitious address at PayPal, then look for it at eBay.

The shipping address added or edited at eBay Checkout is passed to PayPal.

This has been the process for many years before 2019.

The addresses added or updated at PayPal never, ever flow back to eBay.

This is not 1995.

It would cost them to have those things fixed/updated.  That would hurt their bottom line and JD would be upset.

Not saying 'NO' doesn't mean 'YES'.

I know that.

My gripe is that updating one’s address in PayPal does not correct the shipping address for an existing transaction on Paypal itself.

That refunding a buyer under both EBay’s and Paypal’s Seller Protection to work within that program forever removes one’s ability to send a payment reminder to buyer through EBay.

It is unnecessarily cumbersome and doubly annoying because they don’t bother to facilitate their own policies.

How could it? The buyer could have dozens of addresses on file and add new ones on the fly. This is not a simple matter of changing from one single address to a different (and permanent) single address.

I don`t think your little journey  is over yet unfortunately.

6. Eye roll. Refund payment.

If you did this without canceling the transaction due to "problem with address" you`ll have a defect as well, that you will have to waste time calling CS in an attempt to get it removed.

Yup, another win for paypal by keeping the fee and another "sale" ebay can count for the quarter report. Perhaps on the plus side......if they keep fixing things like they did with ebay search......we are fortunate they haven`t fixed/updated this.

Maybe, if it never shipped some algorithms would kick in.

But buyer re-paid last night despite her grumbly “never mind” and item ships tomorrow.

Otherwise, I would have tried to file unpaid item (which is also probably deactivated since buyer did pay once) and ultimately called CS if needed.

I know how to protect myself, I just shouldn’t have to - from the negative fallout of actually FOLLOWING THE RULES.

Time is money.

Once it's done, it's done. If I move and change my Mississippi address, but my existing transaction is going to my grandson in California, how would that be a  good thing??

The easier you are to offend the easier you are to control.

5. PayPal does not retroactively update addresses.

Of course they do not - that would be a DISASTER for sellers.

Imagine the fun when buyer put in an address in the same state as the seller, paid for theitem with calcualted shipping, and then retroactively change their address to one 3,000 miles away with a gmuch greater shipping cost.

Or imagine if I bought an item and gave my Florida address. After that, I bought another item and wanted it shipped to my New Hampshire address - and then PayPal retroactively changed the Florida address on the first item.

And what happens if you ship the item manually at the post office, and then come home to find the address has changed in the meantime?

That is not poor coding - that is wisely maintaining the integrity of the initial financial transaction.

6. Eye roll. Refund payment.

7. Email customer thru EBay. Explain situation to customer and request she pay again.

8. No can do. Item still shows as paid on EBay.

9. Call EBay. CS changes payment status.

All’s right with the world, yes? ......NOT!

Of course not. The proper approach is to simply cancel the transaction as "Problem with address", and have the buyer re-buy the same item and pay with the correct address.

That would be a whole lot simpler than your crazy 13 step approach!

That is good news. I`d rather my statement be wrong than right in this case and only wish you the best.

I've never used a platform anywhere that allowed me to change my address after I made my payment.

Your approach to solving the issue was pure chaos. Rather than gripe at eBay and PayPal why not put the blame where it lies, a buyer who didn't bother to take care of the issue before it became an issue.
