I posted my item and there is a picture of it being left on the doorstep of what looks like a flat but the buyer said they haven't received it.
what happens now?

If the item is marked "delivered" on tracking (which sounds like it is/was) then it's not your responsibility. You're protected from "Item Not Received" Claims
Buyer needs to take it up with carrier or police.

If you sent it to the address eBay provided nothing should happen. If the buyer files a not received claim respond with the tracking number. It should close in your favor.

If it has been marked delivered, it is out of your hands. The buyer is responsible for providing a secure delivery location. There are many threads here for suggestions on how to respond to your buyer, including a lengthy check for you to provide to buyer on what to do next. A quick search of this forum will help.

Oh, whoops, you're in the UK. I should've known when you called it a "flat".
You're posting on the US boards... you should post on the UK boards so you get proper advice from your fellow countrymen. We yanks may have different "rules of the road" (we definitely drive on the other side of the road, that's for sure).

When and if the buyer opens a Claim, respond with the tracking number that shows Delivery.
Do not expect eBay to do this for you.
As a PYA, double check that the address on your package was the same as the address on the Buyer's payment.
(I have twice in the past five years forgotten to add apartment numbers. I don't use labels.)

No whoops,,,,eBay seller protection works the same over there as here.
