Package delivered question.

Package Got Delivered. For the tracking to show delivered does the buyer have to be home? If the buyer is not home will tracking show failed attempt, then bring it to post office? Thanks

No, the buyer doesn’t have to be home. It just means it was delivered to the address.

Everyone has options. Just be sure the best option is right for you.

Only if a signature was required at delivery time (i.e. Signature Confirmation), in which case you will see a Notice Left status in the tracking. Otherwise the package will be scanned as Delivered and left on the porch (or wherever).

Is there a bigger picture here, such as a buyer claiming that they never received the package?

No, I just don't want his $300 item sitting in the rain.....id say he is home because he said to ship the 8th knowing the delivery speed. So, prolly won't have to worry it sitting in the rain. Lol

I'm not sure I'd place too much confidence in his "...knowing the delivery speed."  Good luck though.

While your concern is noble, it is up to the buyer to have a safe place for package deliveries.  And the carrier's judgment to either leave the package or decide it's not safe and leave a notice instead for the recipient to pick up the package at the PO.

A "delivered" scan means the package was left someplace at the address.  USPS carriers have a list of options to indicate where it was left - such as In Mailbox, On Front Porch, In Garage, etc. - when they scan as delivered.  The package may not get left out in the rain, it might go onto a roofed porch, or inside a garage, or left with someone who is home.

As long as there is no signature required and a safe receptacle for the postal worker to leave it, no the buyer does not need to be home.

My packages show delivered to mailbox, or left on front stairs.

Package delivered question.

Are you insuring the package? If so I believe insurance over $200 will require a signature

Actually it's $500 or higher for which the USPS will collect a signature, per DMM 500.4.3.1(c)

Ref: https://pe.usps.com/text/dmm300/503.htm#ep1063624

Note that this is not the same as Signature Confirmation and does not give you a copy of the signature on-line; it's purely for USPS' own protection on insured shipments. For sales of $750 or higher, you must purchase Signature Confirmation in order to preserve your Seller Protection in an Item Not Received dispute.

However, if your only goal is to keep a $500+ shipment out of the rain, insuring it will be sufficient as far as forcing the recipient to sign for it.

All that aside, it's really the buyer's responsibility to provide a safe location for receiving the mail. You can still give your package some basic protection by taping over the seams and label so that it stays legible and mostly dry. My items are mostly small enough that they travel in a ZipLok bag along with the packing slip, inside the box, so that if the outside label is obliterated, there is a backup inside, and if the whole thing lands in the river, it'll float.
