How is it that eBay can charge selling fees on sales tax and shipping? I don't get the sales tax the government does! They also charge fees on shipping. All money I don't get! Not to mention eBay's managed payment cost more than PP. Anyone have much luck selling on other platforms. I sell mostly watches, watch parts and coins.

I actually have instant payments on eBay and it is cheaper than Pay Pal was.

Since ebay is handling the payment method like PayPal did so in the past, it can be understood that a processing fee could be made for processing the sales tax and shipping portion. However, since they are charging the full sales fee percentage, then it could be interpreted that they are over-charging for both the shipping and sales tax portions. (Something that ebay may be found legally accountable for in the future). However, since ebay is handling the processing of the sales tax and seeing that it is paid to the billing State, then the fee that ebay is charging could be justified for that purpose. I don't have much of a problem for paying a sales fee on the State tax portion, but I really get penalized on the fee that I am paying on the free shipping that I am offering. I routinely ship out items with $50+ shipping costs and am subsequently paying $6+ fees for this. What do I do? I jack up my prices and my sales go down. It's not difficult to understand why ebay stock is also going down.

My standard reply to the FVF's on the sales tax. maxine*j provided you some links to the other hundreds or thousands of postings so you can research the FVF's on shipping.
I have always considered the eBay FVF's on sales tax to be the best accounting bargain around. If you sell a $100 item to a buyer in a state with 8% sales tax the FVF on the $8.00 in sales tax amounts to 13.25% * $8.00 or $1.08 if you are promoting at 2% that adds another $.16 so the total FVF on the sales tax is $1.24.
For that $1.24 eBay keeps track of the 10,000 various state, county, city, parish, municipality..... sales tax rates and laws and applies and collects the proper sales tax from the buyer. They then remit those collected funds to the 45 states with sales tax laws on whatever periodic basis is required. There is NO WAY I want to take on that burden as a seller for $1.24 out of a $100 sale. "

We pay fees on the sales tax?
That's ridiculous.
Funny you be.

Uh PayPal was 3% and my eBay selling fees were 9%. Now it’s 15% total.

It would be one thing if they charge 2-3% on the payment portion but it’s 15% on the total amount including sales tax and shipping. They have found a way to squeeze just a little more out of everything!

it's a good thing ebay didn't follow the price of eggs.....

Why are you paying 15%. While my effective eBay FVF percentage varies it is seldom a constant number and it is generally between 14-20% and usually on the lower side of that range. I don't sell high dollar items so I will never get below that range.
