A customer purchased 3 widgets from me.
I was supposed to have 6 in stock.
I could only find 2.
I looked high and low all day long.
After several hours of looking, I gave up.
I sent the buyer a message apologizing and explaining the situation.
10 minutes after sending that message ... I find the other 4.
I had to send the buyer a "sorry never mind" message.
I don't have a lot of OOS situations but when I do, this always seems to happen.
Anyone else have the same bad luck as me? 😉

Never had that bad luck. I always kept listed items in one room and unlisted items in a different room. Generally never had more than 100 items listed at any given time. Keeping the items separated like that may have kept me out of trouble.
I did send wrong item to a buyer once. Sold two items one morning and the buyer from the UK paid immediately so I packed and shipped that same day. Next day the buyer from New Zealand paid but when I went to pack his item I realized I had just shipped it to the UK. Packed and shipped the correct item for the UK buyer with special markings on the label. Emailed UK buyer what had happened and asked him to forward the wayward item to NZ and that I would reimburse him for the shipping. Told him about special markings on the label so he would know which package to forward. About 10 days later, got pos FB from buyer in NZ. Reimbursed UK buyer about $5 for shipping. That was back in 2003 and ebay was much more of a community then and the scammers weren't quite so numerous.
Ah, for a return to those wonderful days but alas...

I've had it happen both as you've described as well as another resulting from an ebay (denied) glitch.
I know my inventory control isn't as organized as my husband thinks it should be (based on his years of work in logistics for a humongous communications company) but I do know where everything is and usually a missing widget is the result of a senior moment or being in too much of a hurry. I've always found the "lost" items.
So far, I've never had to cancel an ebay sale with OOS but I did lose money on a ghost listing that sold. I had widgets in several colors and got notice that one of them sold. When I went to pack and ship, I couldn't find it in green however because I had several blue ones, I emailed the buyer, explained the missing green and asked whether a full refund and a blue replacement would work.
She was ecstatic, having received a $50 refund plus a freebie.
After going through my records, I realized that the OOS item had last sold 2 years prior and this was a glitch that just cost me! Fortunately, I was able to make it right with the buyer and she was okay with it but I was angry that ebay cost me on that one.
I almost wish it was my own mistake!

Dare I ask what a widget is that you speak of?... I was so curious, I went looking, only to find very "interesting" ... let's call them "beanie" babies LOL 😂😂

Being organized is the solution. No one selling should be blindsided by themselves. eBay has enough problems so sellers HAVE to know what the h@ll is going on with their own stock. Drop the number of items if you need to, but KNOW what you are offering and KNOW where they are.
Go eat some poi. That is punishment enough! (Ick!)

Khoros thinks it is an email address so it blued it.

You showed us your organizational pix of your inventory cupboards and such - your set-up is definitely one to ENVY! No idea how you cannot find something! Are you taking extra meds??

No...Never!

Do you use the 'Custom label (SKU)' to tell you where you stick your products?
I have a section of cubby holes on one wall of an unused bedroom which I label with index cards (cubby #1, #2, #3, etc.). If something sells, I see the SKU that reminds me of where I hid it from myself.
Works for me, and I'm losing way too many brain cells everyday.

Yes, it has happened to me. 😣 More than once - usually during Transitional season when I'm shifting inventory.
Are you supposed to be running around, @inhawaii ??

sorta of, went to pay the dinner bill and had only 3 $100 in my wallet. Swore I had 8. Paid the bill with CC. In the car, wife asked why I used CC, told her I was missing $500, she laughed and said she found $500. Where did you find that. In your wallet! Nice wife arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Absolutely yes. Am famous for hiding things on myself - a common trait of many men from Mars and is best summed up in a single phrase in a top shelf country song from the '80s - 'Cause after all, he's just a man". Re: link below

This is why I verified my unsold inventory at least twice per year.

Human error of course. Some idiot (me) had it in the wrong bin. 😉
