Older items listed as New or NWOT

I have been reading various messages about this and whether it is okay. New items DO NOT have to be just recently purchased from a store or factory. I feel completely never worn or used items are still new. It is very possible for a vintage item to be new.  Some suggest they should be listed as New Other. That is not even an offered choice when making a listing. When I see such an item I immediately pass it by thinkingit has a defect. This label will definitely limit viewers. My grandmother was a hoarder and loved to purchase cashmere sweaters. Here in Hawaii she NEVER had use for them but felt they were luxurious and expensive. Might come from growing up poor. So she just got them, put them in individual bags and small boxes. She had accumulated hundreds of them and after she deceased they all were left to me. I have no use for them either so I sell them. Most I list as New Without Tags and I do not believe I am lying to the buyers.

I'm sure others have their own opinions.

No matter how hard we try to store them, items do break down, deteriorate, discolor over the years.

That is why new should only be for factory fresh items.

I buy a lot of vintage items and pretty much all that are in their original packaging are listed as New - Old Stock.

This is tough but I would probably list as NWOT and share your story in the description of how you believe them to have never been worn.

Seeing as they're a "few" years old, do they have odors or discoloration or anything that would lead a buyer to think they "might" have been worn?  I'm afraid this is an easy SNAD.

How valuable are they?

BTW - I love the story of how she hoarded something she'd never need.  That's how it was for depression-era people.  Once they had 2 cents, they enjoyed it.

To me, if it does not have original manufacturer packaging and tags it is not 'new'.  Doesn't matter if it was ever worn or used or not.  'New - Old Stock' still has original packaging and markings.

Ignore my NWOT comment.  I think everyone else is right with New-Old stock.

I never thought of that.  My bad.

I list everything as used. Then I may say NOS or never used or appears as new. It gets found eventually.

If an item is sealed and the packaging is not too heavily worn, I list as New, otherwise it is Used.  I do it this way because I get tired of specifically searching on Used items, only to have the search results still flooded with obviously New In Package items instead.

If it works, sell it. If it works well, sell it for more. If it doesn't work, quadruple the price and sell it as an antique.

You are just asking for A LOT of headaches by listings things as new that are not really new.

Sometimes people buy stuff without even looking at the description and if they see "new" as condition they are going to expect something that is NEW, not something that is years old.

You are just begging to get tons of headaches, returns and negative feebdack for being deceptive with your listings if you choose to continue with this stance.

Think of it this way:  unless you bought it directly from the manufacturer or B&M store, you are already the second/third/fourth/who knows? owner.  My rule of thumb has always been it is used if you can't still go to a distributor or retailer and buy the same item right now.

NOS is great for the condition field.  Provided your category includes it.

Another seller here who likes the term New-Old Stock which is a very telling way to describe what is being offered.

But they would have to be NEW, unused and with original packaging and tags.  Just the way they came off the store shelf whenever they were bought.

In the OP's case, they seem to be removed from that and placed in some other sort of bag for storage.

Yes, I know that many clothing items do not originally come in specially labeled packaging.

Most categories have a "New - Other" but if you CHOOSE to list in one that doesn't, I understand why. I try to make  items that are more then a year old clear that are new, old stock, but that's me. Some people don't understand that a 20 year old item that is sealed and never used is still new, but I would make it clear its NOS. Just like a lot of people refuse to list in a category that has "Parts or repair only" as a condition, that is a choice and I don't recommend it.

Agreed, and also, when I am searching for New (in the case of collectibles like figurines), I don't want all of the sealed in box ones shunted into Used.  All I care is whether or not it's still in its box and has never been taken out for display.
