I've had 3 customers this month who've purchased items in multiple colors/patterns only to return all but one of them because they didn't work out.
Today's was kind of pricey, especially given the low volume of sales recently.
Buyer bought 3 identical style dresses for $36 each. Today she let me know she's returning the 2 she didn't like. If she's true to pattern, I won't see the 2 for at least 10 days and they'll arrive wrinkled. Money I thought I made in May is now 2/3 diminished and any resale will be delayed until June.
I really am thinking about switching to no returns but I know that will just result in a SNAD and its attendant s/h costs, so I'm leaving it as it is.
Still......grrr

Do you have free shipping or free returns shipping? I think that attracts these "try on" types. They think you want to operate like a big box store which does the same.
I don't sell clothing, I know the returns are escalating, I feel for you clothing sellers that have to absorb these costs.

No. I don't offer either free shipping or free returns because of the high return rate for clothing.
I still get calls from eBay every few months urging me to offer free returns so that I can enjoy the thrill of 1% of the selling price credit on that fabulous TRS+ rating.
The math may work in some categories but it sure doesn't work in mine.

I don't honestly think they care one way or the other, about the only thing that changes is the excuses.

The more E-bay promotes New items, the more likely that sellers will have these types of returns. After all, one can return items to almost any on-line clothing store without any hassle except for paying the return shipping.
You cannot promote a venue as being a marketplace without having to meet some of the market standards.
One of the, probably, most quoted statements here is: That is what other sites are doing so E-bay needs to follow suit.
And since the advent of catalog sales, returns have been an accepted part of selling and a great drawing point for those who have difficulty getting to a store or who don't have much of a choice in shopping where they live.
E-bay, should, however, require buyers to pay for returns on this type of transaction.
And there is always going to be the issue of wrinkled clothing when a merchant receives the item back. Lots of people are totally unable to fold clothes properly.
Do I think that E-bay is making the right move in heading this direction? Probably not since it only makes them one of thousands of places to shop for items. But only the future will tell how well this works out for them.
COYOTES RULE!!!
