Number of items for sale - can someone explain?

I have seen this before but would like to know how/why it could happen from those who might know. 

As a buyer I was browsing a specific seller's listings after checking feedback and clicking to see other "items for sale".  The number up top said something like 236 items for sale.  However,  I look at the items and scroll down to the bottom of the page - no page 2 to go to.   That was it.   I counted - only around 40 some items on the one page.  Not 200+.    What gives?  Do variation selections  (size, color)  get counted each as one item by Ebay?   Or if they have more than one of the item for sale under one listing, would that explain it?     Just  curious.

Yes.  Ten listings with ten items available in variations counts for 100 items in search results.   disagree with that, but they didn't ask me.
