I sent a package through USPS and the buyer didn’t want the item so before it got to the buyer I intercepted the package. The package got to the post office and then the tracking said that it was intercepted and then it said returned to sender. After it said that it stopped updating all together. So I’m not sure if it’s at the post office or not. I got email saying it was intercepted with the same tracking I had been using. My question is should I have received a different tracking number? Should I be able to see the tracking update on the way back to me? I would think the tracking would at least “in transit” which usually means it’s been x amount of time since the last scan. But now it doesn’t say anything? It’s been a little over 2 days with no update (which I know I should just wait patiently) but I need this package back.

When it's intercepted, it's returned to you by Priority Mail. I assume that means a new label is generated, and presumably its own tracking number as well.
There's no reason to assume that it's not going to reach you by Monday or Tuesday. It's possible that they may have more details on how your package number was relabeled (i.e. what the new number is) if you ask them to look up your tracking number on their in-house intranet system, something best done by asking them in person, but realistically, I think you should be receiving it by Monday or Tuesday anyway.
If the buyer simply didn't want the package, you could have asked them to mark it clearly as Refused/Return to Sender, not open it, and hand it back to their carrier or post office. If you weren't trying to avoid a scammer, you may not have needed to pay the Intercept fee as well as the return Priority postage.

Be patient on the intercept return.
Allow for USPS handling time.

Yes, that's what I'm suggesting. If you phone them up instead, you might get your question answered, but it's generally better to be there in person with your tracking number written down for them.
