New buyer notification? "Another buyer has made an offer"

I keep forgetting to post about this, happened a few days ago.
I should know by now not to even touch my phone when I wake up before I've had a cup of coffee, but that's what I did.   There was a notification that said something about "Another buyer has made an offer on .... " (I can't remember what all it said, and I think the little notification window truncated the message anyway).  But it did show either the listing title or a thumbnail image of the item; I know because it was about the phone I wanted.  So I just clicked on it without thinking, and then discovered the listing was already ended.

I don't even know what exactly demonstrated my interest in the item, because I'm not sure what all I did the night before.  -I was looking at lots of phone listings, some more than once, putting some on watch, etc.  I don't even know if I put THIS one on watch, but I do know that I made an offer on this one ... then retracted it, something I've never done before (I realized I had authorized it to pay with a card when I would actually need to pay with available funds).

Anyway I just found this interesting and something I've not seen before, "Another buyer has made an offer".  Tell me if it's old news, ha.

Hey, I wonder if that might finally solve this "competing offers" mystery devon@ebay @valueaddedresource @eburtonlab ?!

Read about it:

Been trying to figure it out for over 6 mos.

Well now I really wish I'd been more awake for it.  But the bigger factor might have been the fact that the item was already sold.  Had it still been available, it might have shown me the amount the other buyer offered, and/or any other relevant info, who knows?

Besides still being crusty-eyed I was P!SSED because this buyer had repeatedly said in the title and description 'DO NOT BUY BEFORE MESSAGING ME.'  -I could see why; he'd already sold the phone just days before and I don't know what happened but that buyer left negative feedback in a foreign language, caps-lock and exclamation marks.  So I wrote something like "Hey I know phone sales are tricky, I'm an American eBayer with a long established buyer/seller account and this phone looks just right for me.  Okay to buy?"  -this was early in the evening and I stayed up all night like I often do, but didn't hear back from him. -It was sometime in the middle that I made/retracted that offer, so IDK if he could see that, but if so it might be why he let someone else get it.  Pfff, I was gonna pay the full asking price but OH WELL!. 🤣

I doubt eBay would share that level of info. In fact, I doubt you would have seen any info other than letting you know another buyer made an offer & providing a link to the listing.

But ... once you make an offer you can't make another offer while the first is still waiting for the seller's response. So what good would that notification be? You can't raise your existing offer.

Your case is different because you retracted, so you could have made a new offer.

Seems like it would be most effective if it went to buyers with the item on their watch list as opposed to buyers that already made an offer.

As for your seller - yes, they could see you made then retracted an offer, could have seen you as problematic and/or playing games, and opted to sell to someone else.

More than likely it was on my watchlist.  Shortly after seeing that notification a seller of another phone I was watching sent me an offer that I took, so then I went to my Watchlist and deleted all the ones I had on there.  Should have paid attention to see if one of them was the one in question.

Good to know, thank you.  By the way, do you happen to know this?  -Isn't there a gap of 1-hour or something to change your authorized payment (for items requiring it) ... and is that right after you make the offer or after the seller accepts, and can you change it to Spendable Funds or does it have to be debit/credit card?

Auctions - 1 hr post end of auction you can change your payment method otherwise it will auto-charge your saved payment method.

Offers - I'd have to look it up but I'm almost positive the 1 hr window doesn't apply. As far as I can recall, the only option to change payment method on offers is when the seller doesn't require auto-pay - or if it's one of those offers that goes into pending status and is available for anyone to purchase until/unless you pay for your accepted offer.

Well, I made an offer for ann undercover angel poppy Parker doll around 3:00am. It was accepted for 529.00 at 3:28 a.m. I had to change my card , then during checkout *poof* it was no longer available! I quickly messaged seller who stated that my payment must have auto paid and it’s being shipped to Nancy S. In Las Vegas! I said noooo, I’m not Nancy!  So, “Nancy” swooped in after being notified about MY offer to seller and I saw it was sold at 3:32 a.m. for the full price of $559.00. Guess it really does work!
