One of the great advantages of using Paypal is the flexibility regarding currency balances. I buy and sell in sterling but live in USA and do not hold a sterling bank account.

The result is a doubling of the cost of currency transfers by doubling the transfers required.

I will be migrating away from Ebay to my own website.

I could guess that you are one of ten people out of 180 million that live in one country and intentionally use the currency denomination from another.

Hmmm, what would be an easy fix for your "problem"?

Another option might be to simply buy and sell in dollars instead. 

As for migrating away, that sounds like a great idea if you buying and selling in sterling is more important that the inherent buyer traffic that comes with eBay.

Tell that to all 10 of those Canadian sellers who intentionally buy and sell in US Dollars.
