In all my years selling i havent had the displeasure of a buyer as the one im dealing with now. I sold an ICEE slushie machine using best offer for the VERY REASON of hoping to "shop" for a potential buyer with an established history on ebay and of good fb left for sellers! And a lot of good that did me! So, i accepted "Karen"s offer which was $150 which to me is a lot of money. We are living in a time when porch thieves are rampant and especially so during the holidays. So I decided to ship UPS with signature required. That sent Karen into a rage. How dare I not list that in my ad! How dare I inconvenience her! Talk about a darned if i do, darned if i dont scenario! I didnt want to wait for her to give the go-ahead for signature required lest I be deemed Im waiting to long to ship.
So not thinking its any big deal I sent it requiring signature. Fast forward to today. The package is being held safely at a UPS store practically across the street from this Karen's house (after having done a quick google maps search), but I just received a nasty email how she is too inconvenienced to go pick it up and wants me to have them return it to me and how she is soooo hassled. I honestly don't get why she bought this???? Is it unreasonable to send something needing a signature so as to avoid a thief??? I digress....
So at this point, what do I do? I already know a negative is in the future. My question is do I call that UPS store and ask them to ship it back to me? Or do I wait until this Saturday which is the last day they will hold it and have UPS ship it back automatically? Please advise me on what will have the least worse consequences to me as a seller trying to do the right thing to protect myself. Should I take her up on her offer to have them ship it back to me? Or insist she go claim it? Or tell her if she really doesn't want it, then she simply doesnt need to retrieve it and it will get sent back to me?? I'm wondering if I should take her up on her advice and call UPS to have them ship back to me and HOPEFULLY ebay will remove any impending negative this hag will leave. Any advice is appreciated!!!

Amen! Don't complain when you are the one who made the mistake. YOU are inconviencesing your buyer, yet you call her a rude name.
How much backpeddling will you do if she sees this board???
Great Moms turn them off first.

@tdrake wrote:First off, I don't turn into "Karen" when I get an unexpected "signature required" package, but I do get (silently) **bleep** off and don't buy from that seller again. I always look for that in a listing and if I see it I do not buy. Until recently I worked a job where I was gone well before the PO opened, and not home until after close, 6 and 7 days a week. Once I did leave work (2 towns over) to go to the PO to sign for something, thinking it was something important I was expecting and still a bit **bleep** off, imagine my surprise when it turned out to be a $3 old road map I had won a few days before and not what I thought it was.
This is why I would be extremely *bleep*ed if a seller decided to arbitrarily make a package signature required without warning me. My typical working hours are 10-6. The post office that receives my packages is open from 9-6. I don't have time to go to the post office, pick up a package, take it back home to drop it off (I have nowhere to store it safely at work since our lockers for our belongings are very small), and then go to work in the morning, meaning I wouldn't be able to go pick it up until I have a day off, whenever that might be.
I have lived in this house for 37 years and not a single package has ever been stolen off the porch. I neither need nor want signature confirmation on anything I buy unless we're talking about something worth several hundred dollars, and if a seller took it upon themselves to decide for me that I did? Yeah, I'd be mad.

Why does it need to be disclosed in the listing? If you're expecting a package there is tracking available be home to get it.

Yes you are correct, you could've shipped a box of rocks, so just because tracking shows delivered doesn't mean it's there, in fact if your a new seller eBay/PayPal will hold your funds until the buyer CONFIRMS it's been recieved physically..... I've been through this myself

- Unless your a new seller... Then eBay holds the funds until the buyer CONFIRMS they recieved it and not a box of rocks. Showing delivered doesn't mean anything when your new, I've been there done that with them....I needed my money the package showed delivered they wouldn't release the funds until so many days allowing the buyer to make an item not recieved claim if they didn't get the item but a box of rocks or empty box

I thought carries usually made at least two attempts to get the signature (maybe just FedEx and UPS) also they usually leave a card saying they attempted with instructions to have the package re-delivered or picked up at a store.
The buyer should be able to have it redirected,
As for signature confirmation should have either put in listing or asked buyer after sale if it was OK. With many people working at home these days, it's possible someone is home all the time at her house so a signature is redundant. Maybe porch pirates not a problem where she lives. Maybe she lives in an apartment building that has a front desk that takes in packages ( I guess in that case that person could sign). Maybe her neighbor picks up packages for her when she is not home (we do that some times in my neighborhood). I know when someone does signature confirmation with out asking its annoying. You might have to plan your day around having a package arrive, FedEx at least will text a widow of delivery for a signature.

Better be careful. If you pulled that with me, you would get an automatic negative. I buy on Ebay to get the item delivered to my mailbox. I wish buyers would alert other buyers to such inconveniences. The feedback system is there to warn buyers. I would prefer not to deal with such sellers.

Why would I want to give up a $500 day at work or burn a vacation day because the seller is inconsiderate? People don't buy on Ebay to end up losing a day at work.
Automatic negative to the seller.

Before you become angry with a buyer, you should consider all perspectives.
Perhaps your buyer is someone who is concerned about contracting COVID-19. This person may choose to buy online because they want to avoid potential exposure inside of brick-and-mortar stores. When they order something on eBay, they expect that it will arrive at their door. They can then bring the package inside when they feel comfortable.
You have chosen to ship this item with signature required but did not specify that in the listing which led to their package being held inside of a UPS store, which are seeing record levels of traffic this holiday season. Your buyer now is forced to leave their home to enter an extremely high-risk environment to retrieve it.

That may be true for you but not for everyone. I have recently set up a new seller account for a friend that was never on eBay and nothing had to be "physically" received. USPS (or other) "delivered" tracking was all that was required.
I'll repeat here, anyone requiring someone to sign for something should put it in their listing. I would not ever buy something that I had to quit work to wait at home for delivery, or drive to the post office and beg them to give it to me.
