My Sales have stopped dead! What is going on???

I've been selling clothing on eBay for well over 10 years.  This past week I have no sales, no offers not anything!  This has never happened for this long before.  I'm truly concerned. Is there anything else to try besides the obvious, listing, promoting, etc????

@inhawaii

Your sales have stopped dead?

I can tell you EXACTLY what's going on.

People are not buying your stuff.

It's up to you to figure out why.

If you have not seen the Economy or read about it daily then you should,  Lays off every day.   And  many people go to Goodwill to buy clothes.  The only reason I bought some clothe son here is because I could not find my size at goodwill.

I know what you mean - I buy my clothes at Goodwill, too (and other thrifts), but seriously, often I can't find what I want. It's rubbishy fast fashion, too worn, overpriced, or just not there. So if I don't find it there, I look on here or Poshmark.

That's the market that small, pre-owned clothing sellers like myself try to serve - that style, that brand, that size, that colour or whatever, that our buyer cannot find locally, or simply does not have time to go from store to store looking for, from a hand selected range. We fill in the gaps.

People are still buying clothing like that, and in pretty good quantity, because it's affordable.

Since Ebay added promoting your items. Sales have dropped for a lot of sellers. It looks like in order to sell you need to promote your listing so ebay can get more money from your sale.

Ok, a quick glance at your store told me some really important information.

Your sell through rate is 64 months, that is over 5 years.  It is nowhere near the worst I have ever seen, however it is indicative of some sort of major overall problem.

Your titles are good, your photos are good, which means only one thing, that you are consistently listing things that people don't want or at prices they are not willing to pay.

A browse through you store tells me that you price guess. That is you seem to price items without doing any research as to what those items actually sell for. This is easy to spot due to the very repetitive price points you use and the prices you put on your plush items. Those items are extremely easy to price research.  There is just no way someone checing their prices would put $15 on an item that tends to sell for about $3 plus shipping.

Now every once in a while the stars align, you guess right on the price, the price changes to what you had guess in the first place or someone happens into the overpriced listing and buys it anyway.  My entire card store is based exactly on that, putting 2.99 on every single trading card and having 11,000 of them so they clear me $500 a month after expenses. However 11,000 trading cards only takes up a tiny fraction of the space of 2000 clothing items.

My suggestion?

Use the bulk editor to lower all your prices on your old items 10 percent across the board (minimum price 2.99) and keep doing that until all the old ones are gone or they are all sitting around at $2.99. Meanwhile, actually price research every new item you list looking at both "price lowest first" and at "sold items".

After all your old listings have been 2.99 for 3 months then end them all and bring them to goodwill, if they didn't sell through a series of markdowns and then still didn't sell being at 2.99 for 3 months then they never will sell.

I specifically say $2.99 because $2.99 plus shipping is the price point I figured via timing my processes as the lowest one that is even worth shipping out.

You've got nice photos and a great eye for colour. Unfortunately, many of your brands are so supersaturated - I'm talking about here and local thrifts - that they sell for pennies on the dollar. They DID sell to a certain extent up until a few years ago, but the pandemic brought a huge number of sellers online who clear out thrifts and dump everything here. This swamps our nice selection and presentation.  I'm giving mine a last few months then they get packed up for donation or returned to the original owner (unless they want me to donate). I'm looking for more gig work beyond my research job - this train is running out of track.

Nope, this year is definitely off compared to last year.  Plus scammers are still scamming, dealing with one now.

Ebay has had promoted listings since 2015 @amhsi03 .  That is a very long time to have decreased sales.

eBay has been screwing over sellers since 1995 that’s an even longer time.

If you really feel that way, why do you continue to sell here?

Then why sell here if from the beginning if that were to be true?  It wouldn't make sense.

I think dirk12955 basically sums it up; also may I add that eBay does no advertising and 90% of the people I work with and know ( I know A LOT of people!) either do not shop/buy on eBay at all and many young people ask bewildered-like: "Ebay is still around?" They shop on TikTok, Temu, Poshmark, even on Walmart and Target! (of course I don't want to mention the big A!) Oh, and FB Marketplace as well. Times change, people change, what was hot is not, etc.  Best advice I can give: diversify, experiment, sell on other platforms, don't keep all your eggs in one basket. De-list your oldest listings and tweak them somehow and sell them similar so that they look fresh. Promote if you want to, and don't expect much of a profit. Ebay is more like a chick farm than ever before- cheep, CHEAP, CHEAP! This ain't 1998, or 2008, nor even 2018- every year gets harder, its more of a grind, has more adversity, and remember the song line- "money's tight,  nothing free, won't somebody come and rescue me?" Maybe that should be eBay's theme song CROSSFIRE by Stevie Ray Vaughan (or 16 TONS by Tennessee Ernie Ford ha ha!)
