Is there any way to request money from a buyer (like we used to be able to do with their email thru paypal before managed payments).
Had several instances lately where this would have been helpful.
for instance: buyer bought one item and wanted to switch it for another a bit more expensive.
whereas i could have just sent a money request for the additional $.
now, I don't see that option.
(I know I could cancel the original order etc etc).

@decadesgoneb4 The buyers email is now posted on the transaction. Just go to your order and select view invoice. Email will be posted there with name, address, and even a phone number. Also you can ask for buyer's email as long as you've already completed a transaction, which you technically have.
That said if I were you I would always do the cancel original transaction and have buyer purchase correctly. You always want to be fully covered yourself. Asking them for the difference when they are in fact switching items means they will be receiving something slightly different then original listing. You may inadvertently set yourself up by doing that. Sometimes the longer path is worth the extra effort. Best of luck to you....

No. Oh and technically, it was never allowed, because that makes it an off site sale.

At present it is not possible to request money through manage payments as eBay is not a Bank and eBay's manage payment partners act as payment processors and to best of my knowledge they are not a Bank.
In my opinion eBay will not be able to add "Request payment" to their manage payments as that will require a Banking licence and eBay had this with Pay Pal and the authorities forced the two to separate.
Pay pal is Bank therefore we could request payments directly into our account with Pay pal.
I have kept my Pay pal account for such events.

but, if you still do a money request thru paypal, how do you get the buyer's email? supposedly, ebay messages frown on email addresses.

Pay pal is not a bank ether, it is just a pass thru processor.

I do not have a 'view invoice' in the drop down next to the order (I did not send an invoice). Just view payment details or view order details. I do not see an email address in either.

@decadesgoneb4 Sorry I just saw your new question.
• My eBay- Selling
• Orders- see all orders
• Find your sale
• On left side of sale use dropdown menu
• Print shipping labels or invoices
• Invoice for your own records
• (you will see correct email address)- only good for 14 days

I do not have that option on my dropdown
Does that only appear when i haven't yet shipped?
maybe that is the issue, I've been looking at 'paid & shipped' orders / dropdown?
maybe you only see an email when the order is pending?
