Message from another eBay user, with a private feedback score, asking me to remove a listing?

They are saying that I'm not authorized to sell the item, but there are many others on eBay, both for sale and sold. It's not really a big deal to take it down, but I'm just wondering if this is a legitimate way that companies contact you, or is this a passive-aggressive sort of thing from a random eBay user?

If they were too legit they would file a Vero notice.

It might be a competitor.

However, if your listing is not allowed on ebay, it would be a good idea to remove it, because it could be reported.

to be on the safe side do some research on the product simple search on google may be helpful. you should always do a little more research when something like this happens and not just assume it can be ignored may save you a vero smack
