Hello,

I'm willing to sell on ebay. I had previous 5 year experience as a buyer. But now I would like to sell my old things on ebay, because ebay has wide range of customers. So could you please help me to do that?

I mean how should I start?

Welcome to eBay! There are a lot of good practices when listing. This isn't everything by no means. Other sellers will add to your post.

 Here are a few:

- Provide good customer service. Treat buyers how you want to be treated!

- Do research to see what others maybe are selling the same items for.

- Post clear nice pictures, you get up to 12 free. Pictures can show the item's

condition better. Don't use anyone else’s pictures.

- Write a good title and description. Be sure to note any flaws. The more detailed your description the less chance of a buyer filing a not as described case. I even show pictures of the flaws.

- Fill in the detail section as much as possible.

- Make sure that your shipping price listed is accurate. You cannot ask the buyer for more money after the sale, if you get it wrong.

- Never sell outside of eBay, for your protection.

- Don't ever agree to send to another address other than the buyers registered address.

- Answer your messages from buyers as soon as possible.

- Look out for scams. Suggest reading eBay's section on scams.

https://pages.ebay.com/securitycenter/stay_safe.html#recognize_scams

- Always provide and upload tracking.

- Charge reasonable shipping rates.

- Double check your spelling and grammar.

- Be sure to read eBays selling policies.

https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/selling-policies/selling-policies?id=4214&st=12&pos=5&query=Selli....

- Read eBay's start selling overview; it has some very helpful articles.

https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/selling/start-selling-ebay?id=4081&st=12&pos=6&query=Start%20selli....

- Be familiar with eBay’s prohibited to sell items.

https://www.ebay.com/help/policies/prohibited-restricted-items/prohibited-restricted-items?id=4207&s....

As a new seller you will have selling limits. eBay does this to make sure that you show that you are a good seller and show a good track record.

https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/listings/selling-limits?id=4107&st=12&pos=2&query=Selling%20limits....

You will also have to know what trademark items you can't sell. If you list an item that is on the prohibited list, VERO (Verified Rights Owner Program) will get your auction listing closed.

https://pages.ebay.com/seller-center/listing-and-marketing/verified-rights-owner-program.html#m17-1-....

Again, this isn't everything. This is only the tip of the iceberg. There are a lot of great folks here that will add to what I started. It is good to hear what everyone has to add.

Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Most importantly, start small. Sell a few $10 or $20 items before the Iphone...😀

Shipping is the hardest part of mail order.

And online selling is just mail order in a fancy wrapping.

Bookmark this.

DON'T GUESS.

Buy a digital scale. Mine cost me under $20Cdn from a big box store.

You also need a tape measure or ruler.

Rates can change on 1/8". Don't guess.

Package as if a 50 lb box will drop on your shipment from a height of two feet.

(I was told this by a Canada Post employee. Here is a picture of a USPS terminal.)
POSTAL TERMINAL.jpg

Don't ship internationally until you have at least 10 DSRs, know what DSRs are, and understand why they are not important.

Use Global Shipping when you do ship internationally. The Seller Protection is great.

Post Office boxes are the safest addresses. Followed by Freight Forwarders (and Global Shipping is a freight forwarder).

Shipping will sometimes be more than the asking price for the product. Buyers hate that. For those items, consider using Flat Rate shipping and moving the cost of shipping to the asking price.

Which is cheaper?

A $5 item with $10 Calculated Shipping?

A $10 item with $5 Flat Rate Shipping?

A $15 item with Free Shipping?

EBay tells you to use Signature Confirmation when your payment is over $750 including shipping. But if you feel uncomfortable you can use it on lower value shipments.

Don't overlook Hold For Pickup, which means your shipment will not be left unattended on the porch.  Both of these mean the customer has to claim the shipment in person.

The best insurance is your own packaging, followed by tracking, followed by Signature or Hold.

While most people are honest and most Claims are based on disagreements, not scams, do not Refund without a Return.

A No Returns policy is not a No Refunds policy. It just means you may lose both the product and the payment.

Thanks for including that great photo!

You should post that for every OP who is wondering where their package is!

"Why it's under that big funnel drop with all the packages piled on it, which feeds the moving conveyor belts.. your package fell off a few days ago!  No one cleans under those!"
