Just my luck, the winning bidder asks for over 1 1/2 months to pay!

Oh well, was happily watching the bidding on my item get to the point where I was satisfied (barely) with the final amount. The buyer did not pay. Now, today, almost one day later they are asking for 1 and 1/2 months to pay!

I courteously mentioned PayPal credit as the item is over $99. Now, I have to wait until this dud responds before I can cancel.

Just venting here. How can someone bid on an item and expect the seller to wait 1 and 1/2 months is beyond me.

I know 48 hours is the standard to pay, but isn't there a time limit that a sale item can be invoiced? Is this a scam on the buyers part to say they never received it, etc.? Anyone have any experience with duds/scammers like this?

They said they were waiting for their "disability check." Sounds like a scam to me.

My first thought was, Are you kidding me?

Not you, the buyer.  It sounds like it is questionable as to whether that check will ever be received.

The buyer would have seen Paypal credit on your listing if they were someone Paypal wanted to offer that to.  I suppose if they are a new buyer, they would not see that but could just apply.

I think I see a Unpaid Item Dispute in your future.

You could tell the buyer that you are sorry but you are assessed fees that you have to pay, and Ebay doesn't allow you to wait that long, then ask if they would like you to cancel.  Then you can cancel with buyer requested and no defect.

Your call, of course,  and others should be along to help you.

Once you are free and clear of this buyer, maybe a second chance offer would work.  You could contact the runner up and ask if they might be interested so they know it might be coming.  Again, your call.

Ugh. Sorry that happened. I think every seller that has run auctions has had that buyer and if they haven't, they will eventually. I wouldn't correspond with them any longer as waiting on a "disability check" by itself means when they run out money in the month, your items gonna get returned for a refund. I've had it happen - same scenario - waiting on social security check, pays and almost 4 weeks later, files a SNAD to get all their money back and free return shipping.

I personally would end the communication and just let it roll into an unpaid item case. You'll be saving future sellers a headache when they get that strike.

Cheers

@texasclassicvinyl  Checks are cut a lot more frequently then 1 1/2 months ... and who knows what the truth is.  I normally will wait up to one week, then process a UPI if payment has not come in by then.  You can certainly do what you want but if that were my Buyer I would send a polite message that I allow up to a week to pay and if that is not long enough they can message back requesting a cancellation otherwise I would have to process the UPI at the end of a week.

I "think" eBay would support that type of decision but I would never call them and ask ...

You do not have to wait for them to respond. You can file an unpaid item dispute after two days if you want.

No, you don't. You are not the buyer's Finance Department. Just send them a short, polite followup note to say that unfortunately, after further review (*cough* Smiley Wink), you are not able to wait that long, and ask them if they would like to cancel instead. Don't over-explain; a couple of sentences should be enough.

If you get a reply agreeing to cancel, then go ahead as Buyer Requested; otherwise, anytime after 48 hours from the end of the listing, you can file the Unpaid Item dispute, and close that out an additional 96 hours (4 days) later if no payment has arrived by then.

Just want to add, don't forget to BBL this "buyer".

It's incredible that someone would even ask you to wait that long.

Usually Social Security Disability payments come in the first four days of the month. If they are asking you to wait for a month and a half, that means they are not waiting for next months check, but the month after that. It is alarming that someone thinks it is ok to participate in an auction knowing they don’t have the funds to pay.

However, i see no indication this could be a scam, but rather a person who has overextended themselves financially. Sadly theres just no way to know without doubt. While it is easier to cancel a transaction, i think i would file the Unpaid Item Dispute. Sorry this happened to you.

You could just write:

Dear buyer,

I regret not being able to accommodate you with a delayed payment plan, but I have bills to pay, as well.  Please request a cancellation of the transaction or just let the NPB process complete.

Best regards,

Seller

Submit NPB and let it close or ship when payment arrives.  If it isn't an immediate life-saving item, they can buy it  later when they want to afford it.

Good points, but the desire to buy it again later may dissipate as time rolls by and the next shiny thing wanders into view.

Well, if the desire fades after the 'Ohhh, look!' phase, then it would probably end up being a return, anyway.  Smiley Mad

Then the seller could do it again for 60-90 days to pay.  Smiley Surprised

Nicely said. I would take it a step further.

Dear Buyer,

I regret i cannot accommodate your request for delayed payment. Please advise if you prefer to cancel the transaction, or remit payment within 7 days. Thank you,

Your Seller

You are lucky.

The most expensive VHS tape I sold ever at $540 came with a bran new buyer asking me if he could pay cash. Then, with a check, then...wait.....just wait...….pay me slowly for  months. Smiley Very Happy

So, after mumbling jumbling with eBay's CS, in  calls, they told me different scenarios, from accepting cash, to meet the guy who lived 450 miles away. Smiley Happy

Making it short he paid me via check, I cashed it, next day my wife was yelling at me because there was a charge back in her bank account for the same amount Smiley Frustrated

Thanks to one of those slow days of Priority Mail I was able to get it back.

Now, let's say you are a nice guy or girl. You agree with this buyer plea,  you will need to ship the item. Right?

From there, the episodes of Ebay soap opera will be not that funny. Smiley Wink

They're probably not happy with the final price and figured this unreasonable request would be an easy way to get out of the deal.
