JAN 2019 Sales Have Tanked - Bad 4th Q too

Anybody elses sales down 50% or more.  The Performance metrics are flawed.  I've been doing about 1/2 the sales I did the past few years during 4th Q and the start of the year.  What's your take?

I looked at some of your items, and yeah, your pricing is way jacked up.  No wonder your sales are down.  You have a copy of the 1989 Batman Movie Adaptation for $24 with shipping!

I sell that for $2 plus shipping in NM condition.  You are $18 more than me, so you think anyone is going to buy that?

Just a lot of your items, especially in the comics, have insane pricing.  That is a whole section of your store that is dead and doing nothing.

Buyers would rather buy on Amazon than eBay.  Buyers are less interested in used or vintage stuff than in previous years.

True that - I guess?  I don't know - other sites like the snooty crafting site is starting to look more attractive.

Although I find it really odd.  Amazon has been on fire for years.  I was selling vintage stuff like gang busters up through the summer - and then all of a sudden lights out.  I guess I hit some type of yearly cap?

Or some changes they made with the Fall Seller Update catered to drop shippers?

I don't know about that. I just had a great last week, and I *only* sell vintage items.

Yes, there are many people that like buying new things on A, but I think realistically people are also buying on the many, many other sites that have sprung up (some of those sites even mention 'they are just like Ebay' on their TV commercials). My kids (late teens, young adult) know of & use so many of these non-A sites, it just amazes me. E-commerce has grown by leaps & bounds, even in the last year.

OP, I don't doubt there could be other things at play here (bogged down search, Ebay glitches). But I don't think it is due to your selling vintage items.

There have been many of us who have had our sales drop over the past several months. December was my best month since April.  I sell Vintage Jewelry. What I did notice that helped was adding more items on a regular basis. Throwing in an auction every now and then to bring in new customers. Adding items other than jewelry.

In the end it's a you know what shoot. I slowed down adding items at the end of the year and I also noticed a drop in activity, so I'm trying to post as much as I can now. That's the only thing that has worked for me in the last 8 months. I don't do promoted listings because I feel as a store owner I shouldn't have to.

Probably not that.  Perhaps another seller came on board about that time, undercutting you on price.

I can say from personal experience working in a B&M chain store that sells a wide variety of types of items that the VAST majority of the people who come through our doors these days are under 50.  So if you aren't selling things that have much appeal to people under the age of 50, I think it's inevitable that your sales are going to be steadily declining.  The broader buyer base is changing.

I was researching a widget the other day and ended up on an A page for a handcrafted item.  Just like the other handcrafted site.  I didn't take the time to explore that category on A; will get back to it sometime.

With the government shut down, the stock market being eratic, and a lot people have a winter layoff, folks are buying necessities, and try to get by.

That Amazon Handmade was started in 2015, they made a big splash at the time, was supposed to mean the end for Etsy, investors went wild (as usual with every little thing AMZ does) and the media called it the "Etsy Killer".

After the initial flurry of excitement it's been pretty silent on that front although I'm sure they are doing "some" business.

I have been selling mainly clothing for years. My sales tanked last summer.....decreased by probably 25-30%.

The topper is that I have had NO sales since this past Friday morning! I rarely have one day with no sales but a whole weekend?

Sadly, these decreased sales are forcing me to collect Social Security earlier than I wanted to.....I have an appointment this Friday.

I want to think that's what's happening. It just occurred to me since January last year was better than this year. Hopefully February will be better cause I'm starting to despair 😞
