I follow the same methods I use when packing large items.

Depends on what kind of item you are packaging.  Safe and secure is the key.  But I don't package a glass vase the same as I would a book.  This is a much more complex subject, not a one size fits all.

It depends on what it is and where it is going and the options you have with the Sri Lankan postal service. Pack fragile items like the needed to survive a fall from a tall table and have multiple other packages fall on top of them. Lots of packing and in some cases double boxed.

For things where you don't have to worry as much about breakage use the smallest box the item will fit into but add enough packing to keep the items from sifting around inside the box or package and potentially working their way out of the box/package during shipping.

Use sufficient tape to make sure the box/package does not have any openings or weak spots where the item could fall out of the package or the package could easily become opened.

If you are shipping internationally check the import regulations of the country you are shipping to and make sure the item can be imported into that country and will not be seized by customs. Complete the required customs forms and attach them to the package. Make sure the label and customs forms are both securely attached to the package. USPS reports show that the #1 reason for lost packages is the label has become detached during the shipping process.
