Is this some sort of scam??

After reading about a seller stating that despite seeing Beanie Babies sell for thousands of dollars, she was getting no bids on hers. Several sellers stated that while they "sold" for that price they doubted that the sellers ever received payment. So, being a rainy day with nothing to do, I decided to check it out....
So I went to "Original Beanie Babies sold listings.
Just today (8/30) there were about a dozen listings that were sold for over 10,000 dollars!!!!
All being sold by sellers with ZERO feedbacks.
And all being bought by buyers with what looks like randomly generated Ebay ID's with ZERO feedbacks!
The locations of the buyers and sellers look different...but....what in the world is going on??

@joliztoyco,

Gift card/fake payment scam. Some of the sellers have confirmed it. Most are too embarrassed (or disappointed, or ashamed) to admit it though.

The "buyers" have no intention of actually paying. They try to trick the sellers into shipping without being paid, by sending fake payment info. Most of the time, they ask the seller to include a gift card for several hundred dollars, as an "extra gift" and say that they will pay extra for it (which is not possible to do with eBay payments). Then they tell the sellers that they need to provide the gift card number, and/or the tracking number, before the payment will be deposited into the seller's account. All lies.

They are actually just after the gift cards. The beanie babies are just the bait. There are fake blogs and online "articles" that talk up the value and interest in them, to create a false sense of value, and and try to hoodwink eager sellers who are desperate to believe that their old collectibles still have some value.

As well as beanie babies, they also do this with Corningware baking dishes, and old but common and inexpensive stamps or coins. Probably other things as well.

Pardon me for asking...but I am not familiar with the term. People just bid for fun?

Yes. They have to prove to themselves that they are smarter than the mundanes/muggles who are just earning a living.

It goes with a diet of Mountain Dew and Cheetos and living in your mother's basement.

And knowing, deep down, that they are inadequate.

It is just people playing games. They figure since a seller is playing games they would just play along and keep bidding for fun.
