Is eBay poised to pass Amazon in Internet Sales???

From a C/Net article:

"Amazon on Monday confirmed that it's significantly delaying US deliveries of nonessential items, as part of its effort to get more medical supplies and household staples to its customers during the coronavirus pandemic. According to product listings on its website, some of these shipments will be delayed by as much as a month."
_______________________________________________________________-
One advantage eBay has is that it's Sellers are individual accounts, NOT warehouse based.  With Amazon "delaying" shipments on non-essential items as much as a month perhaps Buyers will be less likely to purchase from them not wanting to wait that long?!?  If eBay Sellers can still ship their items they stand a good chance of having their sales increase IMHO.

I live in Rhode Island and just watched her daily news conference. she basically said if Cuomo wants to sue us bring it on. She just declared a new order that ANY out of state travelers are required to Quarantine for 14 days and every out of state license plate will be pulled over by the Rhode Island State Police informing them of the quarantine and documenting where they are going and what they are doing here.

Our District Attorney worked at the Justice Department under President Obama, and he and other lawyers have stated Our Governor is well within her rights doing what she is doing to protect the citizens of our small state. There seems to be quite a rift between her Cuomo over this development. He really should be worried about what is going on in his own state and stop worrying about what other Governor's are doing in their states.

The idea is to contain the virus, I already posted people should stay in their own state.  Florida could sue New York for all those who fled south carrying the virus ... I think the news said Florida is asking people coming in from out of state to self quarantine for 14 days ... so, there have to be some travel protocols for situations like this and since the country has never done anything like this new rules will have to be created.

We have a family member who drives truck and that person is making deliveries to New York City with essential supplies ... do you think we aren't concerned for their safety and that of their family including us? On our road here we have three homes side by side where one or more members work in the following:  retirement home, hospital ER, doctor's office, driver for hospital pick up service (samples, blood tests, etc) ... talk about being on pins and needles!!!

Just to be clear, I was offering SixBit as an example, not recommending it (although I do use it, and like it). I believe right now SixBit is offering Six Months free to anyone who wants to switch from TurboLister to SixBit, but I'm not sure if that offer is still going on. But otherwise, yes, there's a monthly fee, and various levels. I don't think the basic level includes Shopify, etc. But again, I was just using this as an example. There are other listings programs and services as well. Just trying to point out that, especially for Amazon sellers who are already multi channel , adding more listings to ebay during the free promo period makes sense and probably can be done by most of these sellers with relatively little extra cost.

All people should stay put right now wherever they are. the quicker people accept this the quicker we will get back to normal as a country.  And more importantly less lives lost.

It's a shame any of this is even necessary.  As others have said, the best plan is just to stop moving around and interacting with other people.

I've barely left my house in nearly a week.  (I did have to go out yesterday, because we had an inoperable car that need to be removed from the lot it was parked at.)  Traffic is certainly down, but there were still a number of cars on the road, and all I could think was, where in the heck are they going?  Most stores are closed, there are no sports, people are generally working from home (if at all), and visiting friends or relatives wouldn't be the smartest move at this point.

But, I guess not everyone really understands the gravity of the situation, especially since there are some folks who have a national audience declaring it's just media hype.  That's just going to make this a lot longer road than it could have been if we'd have taken it seriously sooner than we did.

I purchased 3 cd's from amazon on March 23rd and they arrived at my door yesterday 4 days later and 1 day before expected delivery. They don't seem to be slowing anything down.

Maybe you bought from a merchant on Amazon, not from Amazon or Fulfillment by Amazon. Merchants like me are shipping in 1 day.

Yes - they're already geared up for larger scale fulfillment and can easily expand, probably anchor store already and able to add inventory smoothly via bulk listing. It's just another channel.  Heck, even I sell in three different places and for me to get set up and going on another takes very little effort and no real expense.  After someone suggested the possibility to me all it took was a little research to realise why eBay was offering such a huge listing promo.

Yes, Sweetnam said that was one reason for the size of the promo. The other reason was speed....they wanted to get something out quickly, and this was quicker and easier than setting up something structured, like "x' for basic stores, "y" for premium stores, etc. This way, sellers can just use as many as they can use, whether that's ten or ten thousand....this way, pretty much every store seller is covered with just one promo.

The point is this virus is everywhere already. These travel restrictions should have been enacted two weeks ago or more. It’s pointless now, to quote a meme “the call is coming from inside the house”

Personally I think Covid-19 was here a lot earlier then we realized ... I think many reports of pneumonia and flu like symptoms were actually Covid but not identified ... there was no test for it until recently.  Now the testing is simply letting us know where it is and where it isn't ... I still think travel bans will have a good impact against it.

I saw a couple of reports on the news that they now do not believe it originated in one of the wet markets BUT the wet market allow it to incubate and spread.

Thanks for sharing. I think it is not at all surprising to hear that your Gov knows what she is doing. I was quite certain she would consult her legal advisers before taking these radical steps, and now your post just verified that. Thought about this whole situation on and off today, what is going on over in your neck of the woods. Could it be that some really rich New Yorkers have vacation homes in Rhode Island and complained to the NY Gov about being pulled over, etc., etc. ? Even the not too wealthy New Yorkers may be fleeing NY State, to get away while they can, but would their complaints also have a direct pipeline to the NY Gov's ears?

Best of luck, we all need it

I agree with you, except that I think international flights should have been shut down even earlier, that is, almost instantly when the Doc in China died, only allowing for American citizens to return from wherever they got stuck - and then setting up ALL of them in mandatory 21 days quarantine. Too late for that, now.

However, I also agree with Mr. Lincoln that even now, it is not too late to put a halt to interstate travel - it may not completely prevent the spreading of the virus, but it could put a dent into the speed with which it is spreading. Of course, truck drivers, medical staff, etc. must be exempt of such travel ban, and unfortunately, they could be exposed to the virus and bring it back to their relatives or friends, but it is still better than the busload of people going down to other states to bulk shop for necessities that my friends are describing who live in PA.

And if they would only shop for themselves...but apparently, many buy in bulk to sell the surplus online. I was browsing eBay today and ran across multiple listings with Rapid Rise yeast. A 3-pack of those that usually costs 99 cents - to 2 bucks, depending on the brand, is listed now on eBay for 12.99 And I am sure many will buy it. In my eyes, that is just as bad a price gouging as selling hand-sanitizers for inflated prices, because most people who need years do so to be able to bake bread and similar food. I understand we cannot post here sellers' names, but if you are so inclined, run a search for Rapid Rise or Quick Yeast, you will see...

I totally agree with bans on interstate travel. I just don’t think they should quarantine states like that. Everybody needs to stay home.

This attitude is why people in the south are going to die. Infected students went back to liberty university. People think this is a a New York problem and that gives them a false sense of security and leads to things like spring break and people still going to restaurants.

we had a chance to lessen the impact in less urban states but we blew it.

Your question about "COULD IT BE THAT SOME WEALTHY NEW YORKER'S HAVE HOMES HERE" is exactly how this started. New Yorker's and Connecticut residents with summer homes here in our coastal towns, out on Block Island and out on Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Island technically part of Massachusetts but in close proximity to us were coming here to "QUARANTINE" themselves in their 2nd homes, and upsetting the year round life long residents, and frankly putting a scare into them for good reason. They really were not quarantining though but just trying to escape the madness in New York and moving around freely here, and there was a very large influx of them.

And not to sound judgemental but there are a fair amount of drug dealers who regularly drive down from New York and go back and forth between some of our poorer and drug riddled cities and towns doing what they do. Our Governor needed to put the reigns on this because of New York is now the epicenter of this virus here in the USA.

Not one year behind and yes, they are guesstimates. Also, remember that the flu virus mutates and only viruses from flu banks are used to make the vaccines. So whatever the actual flu that season will be, the vaccine, while the exact same strains may have been used to make it (happens sometimes), will never be 100% effective, nor does it expected to be or even have to be.

The problem with COVID-19 is that it is more contagious than the flu and has a higher mortality rate.

Just one note about animals: just about any animal can carry viruses that could make you sick. Your pet cats and dogs, rodents, birds, etc. - animals you would never eat make numerous people sick every year.  But you do need a perfect storm of a highly contagious virus that  does not kill the host fast (like ebola) making the jump in a densely populated area and fast international travel takes care of the rest. Luckily this does not happen that often but perhaps people will now see what happens when it does and will learn from it.
