I've done a lot of 3 day auctions, too, and they usually work out well. If you do 3 day auctions, a good time to list is on either Thurs or Fri so your item gets a full weekend of lookers.
If I have something that I feel is hard to find and of potentially high value, I'll consider doing a 10 day auction and make sure to list it on a Thurs or Friday to get 2 weekends of lookers.
