Interesting Inquiry I received This morning

Thought I would share a message I received very early this morning.

"You claim this to be 14K white gold however the the description says ATR which suggests sterling silver. We have a SEVERE allergies in our family to anything less then gold. Please clarify."

From a new account - all the purchases have been in the last 30 days and I suspect within this month - just a guess. 9 purchases when I looked this morning that received feedback and two more additional purchases since then that they received feedback on. All the purchases are jewelry and I know some of the sellers they purchased from. A gold buying spree indeed. Due to eBay policy, I cannot disclose the user ID which is really to bad.

My response to them was

"Thanks for inquiring, given your concerns and reservations, this is probably not the ring for you. Have a great week."

The referenced item is:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/142946714976

I personally decided to block the buyer as my fraud-dar was going off this morning and I am really in no mood for dealing with a fraud transaction not to mention my "this customer sounds like they might be a Pain in the Bottom" alarm. Could be a rich Saudi prince/Princess Harem or some such thing...but... just did not pass the smell test for so much recent activity for a individual buying a piece of jewelry for themselves.

Yes...I gave up a potential sale and it was a painful decision.

Curious minds want to know, does this raise red flags for anyone with the above details?

Cheers

A comment like that would put a member on my BBL immediately and I might not even send a nice reply like you did.

What does  ATR actually mean, and does it imply that the alloy may include silver as the buyer suggests?

ATR should be the Jewelry Company Name - ATR Jewelry Co

I am in a jewelry business so i know a bit about it.

14K ATR means that it's 14k Gold and ATR is a brands that is "responsible" for this stamp. Aka they made it.

I have no idea what is ATR but it's normall practive to have a brand after 14K (metal purity) stamp.

Bad news: I can stamp 14K my forehead and it will not become gold just because of that. So normally stamp is as valid as a name that put it on.

PS: I can not say if your ring is real gold or not from the pictrue but your price seems to be low for 14k white gold.

With cursory research, I found many rings stamped ATR which are from Thailand and are a combo of sterling and gold. Your buyer has probably done the same research I have and is asking a reasonable question in my opinion.

As a seller, your job is to sell by explaining why this ring has no sterling in it and is a good buy for the buyer. It surprises me you’d call “fraud” on what seems like a reasonable question to me.

Of course, maybe you’re not sure about the ring. Where did you get it?

It's easier to make fun of the buyer for asking and just block them. Especially if what you found about it being made in Thailand is true.

I think the problem is that ATR symbol. Many jewelry manufacturers put their brand stamp on a ring along with the metal purity, however, when I acquire an item with a stamp like that I thouroughly research what that stamp means. Is it the manufacturer, and does it mean that the ring from that manufacturer is a poor or high quality product. Some foreign companies may not produce the same quality of item. So always do research and know what to tell people. People with allerigies cannot wear stuff with alloy of any kind.

I just have to say some truly beautiful jewelry comes from Thailand!  Don't group them with say....China....!

I would agree with this (though I would send a courteous reply), because of the mention of allergies. 14K gold has 41.67% other metals, and for white gold that is usually nickel, which is highly allergenic. If this is a big concern, they should not be buying white gold, or such a low karat content.

And, especially because your listing states:

All of my gold and silver is 3rd party authenticated before listing for sale. This piece has been xray analyzed to ensure the metal makeup meets industry standards for solid gold jewelry. Where appropriate, acid testing has been used as well.

and because a quick search of eBay shows that the jewelry from ATR which is made of both sterling and gold is clearly marked "14K 925". Your ring is only marked 14K, not 925 as well. The ATR company appears to be accurate with their  markings.

...of which there is a company by that name in New York, with a fairly distinctive logo. I thought I found a company in Thailand of the same name in some Googling yesterday, but now I can't turn it up again.

Just out of curiosity: is it really possible to be allergic to some metal that isn't pure gold?

I have seen and experienced this particular response many times, especially from new but also small time sellers, I feel that while your fear is justified these knee-jerk responses are not helping sales at all. There has to be a better way of dealing with these types of buyers than shooting oneself in the foot while slamming the door in their face.
