If a buyer didn't pay, and a seller didn't do anything

I am just curious if, as a seller, I did nothing to collect the payment, and the buyer didn't pay, would the sale exist in limbo forever, or would the sale be cancelled after a certain period of inaction by either party?

The sale would remain active, and you'd be on the hook for fvf

OK, thanks, I understand the FVF, so the sale would never end, a year later and it's still active? It's an odd question but I'm curious.

It would not be cancelled.

Better for the seller to file a Unpaid Item Dispute (UID) and then close it out if the buyer still hasn't paid within the prescribed UID timeline.  That way, the seller gets back their FVFs, and the buyer gets a strike against their account which may well preclude them from buying from others, as many sellers have their Buyer Requirements set up to prohibit bids/purchases from buyers with "X" number of UIDs on their accounts to guard against deadbeats.

After 36 days, the buyer no longer will see the option to pay for the item.  That's why there's a 32-day cutoff for filing an unpaid item claim.  But there's no actual cancellation per se -- that would get you a credit for your final value fee.
