I see 100s of something being bought and sold. I list the same thing and ebay says I can't sell it

I don't understand. I have a piece of railroad history that I would like to see a collector have so I look up similar items and prices that they sold for. There are 100s for sale and that have been sold on eBay.

My grandfather was hired by the Lehigh Valley Railroad[LVRR] in 1917 as a deputy sheriff to watch over railroad equipment for sabotage pre-WW1. I found his original RR papers saying he is a deputy sheriff working for the RRs.  and a 13" police style night stick stamped "LVRR". I list the baton with the history of the piece and pictures and a pict of my grandfather's paper.

1 minute later I get an email about trying to sell weapons on ebay?  I had no idea what they were talking about.  I just see it as history. Why do others sell and mine is a weapon? IF I list it in a different way, would I be able to list it then?

It's what you put in the title that can get it deleted.

'Baton'..."defensive weapon by law enforcement officers"....never mind the history of it...just the word does it.

Also, there are 100,000s of knives and long bayonets, ect. on ebay recently sold or being sold. They shut me down because I would like to get a 13" piece of wood to someone that' collects RR history? Who comes up with your rules?

I would study carefully some of those other listings that are out there and see how the title is presented, category and the item specifics. I was able to sell an ebay banned item (a book) by doing that. However, you have to be careful because you are on their radar and they might catch it again.

Nightsticks are not allowed.  It may be you see hundreds but thousands were listed and removed.

Hi @udoittwo the problem now is you are on eBay’s radar and must be doubly careful how you list and what you list.

Once a seller finds themselves on the radar, it is likely they may be scrutinized more carefully moving forward.

eBay penalties are cumulative, and multiple violations can add  to the severity of punishments, with the ultimate being eBay may suspend selling privileges altogether with no avenue for appeal or review. For lesser offenses, they may instead choose to hold payouts, or  lower your listings in Search placement among other negative results. So whatever you do—do not relist this item. I cannot stress this enough. It is a terrible risk.

Using what other sellers are doing as a guide in decision-making can be an unreliable method when researching new items.

First, always go straight to eBay written policy. Sellers are accountable to eBay for knowing all the rules of governance and there are a lot. Spend some time reading everything in the User Agreement and restricted items policies.

But eBay sees it as violating their rules and they are the Powers That Be.

Why do others sell and mine is a weapon?”

With something like a billion items listed , eBay’s automated system may not apply the rules perfectly across the board. Things inevitably fall between the cracks. What counts—all that matters—is your violation was caught, regardless of what others are getting away with. eBay’s unfair application of the rules does not relieve you of your obligations.

Please don’t relist. Word to the wise.

No, they shut you down because you listed a nightstick, and nightsticks are not allowed:

The following or similar items are not allowed:

Hand weapons such as: brass knuckles in any form, leaded canes, nightsticks, nunchakus, or sansetsukons

See speeders every  day doing 70+ in a 45 mph zone.  Only see  one of those rascals  pulled over with the cop cars blue light flashing and the GPS/deputy/ policy officer writing them up.  Happens the same way every time.  oh  those speeders get  religion when they  see those flashing light for a little while.

Ebay comes up with the rules.

They own the website.

You agree to their rules when you sell here.

Who comes up with the rules at your house?

Enough with "the house" analogy.

Do you charge people to come into your house?  Do you only let them in to do business?

Its a business web site, and both sides are engaged in business.

So, an 18" by 1 1/2" stick made of oak (with or without a leather strap handle) is a lethal weapon.

But I can purchase any manner of edged, sharpened, high-carbon steel blade I desire on the same platform?

I agree 100% with @inhawaii that the House gets to make the rules.

That's as it should be.

Just would be nice to occasionally see some semblance of logic, reason or consistency in the process.

Whatever you do, do not relist the item under any circumstances. You may have your account banned if you do, which in the long run could cost you far more than the nightstick is worth.

Your item is great and definitely worth selling, there are a RR collectors who would love to have it. Just don't sell it here.

No one can please everybody.  So you have to please your  self.

Exactly.

There are 1/2 million knives listed for sale right now. I can buy a knife that straps to my ankle and hides under my pant leg. I suppose eBay says "it's for butting bread".

I could care less if someone wanted to buy or sell a knife. Don't get me wrong I do believe there are some things that should have some sort of control over who buys or sells them but just about anything can be a weapon. Box cutters with 1" exposed blades were used to bring down passenger planes full of people. You can hold a roll of dimes in you hand and punch someone doing very serious damage. Maybe eBay should ban coins or maybe just rolls of coins. I can buy slingshots, compound bows that I can do some serious damage from  100 yards away but a piece of wood regardless of the shape is a banned weapon and probably now I'm on the black list for asking questions or expressing an opinion.

I'm sorry that I vent but I just don't understand and saying "this is the way it is" doesn't answer anything.

Sounds like what parents say when they don't want to answer if they don't have an answer. .
