I take pictures with a 5MP wide-angle lens microscope digital camera. I then try to add my photo's and it tells me an error had occurred. The file is too big.

They should stick around, and watch for a bit, because many of they can never even find their way back to the thread they started 😁😁😁

The obvious solution would be to simply make the photo smaller.

If you're using Photoshop to tweek, adjust, etc. You can reduce the pixels to an acceptable size. I use 2000x1800 pixels...jpg file.

Then, as others have said, you must make the file size smaller, using whatever image handling / manipulation application you use.
The maximum file size for a photo to use on eBay is 12 megabytes. The maximum image size is 9000 x 9000 pixels. HUGE! You don't even need anything that large.
Supported formats are PNG, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, and GIF.

Its not the picture (image) size thats the problem - Ebay is going to scale down the image anyway so it fits in the listing. The problem is the file size - its too big for them to upload and process.
When I shoot photos for my selling account I have the camera setting for image files only 1 Mb each. Anything more than that is a waste of disk space. If you try downloading a typical Ebay listing image you will find that its only around 200 Kb in size after they have finished condensing what you uploaded.

You may have the image quality in your camera set too high so you get ultra-big files. I've always found that the lower setting works fine - eBay isn't fine art so as long as resolution is adequate is fine. Go into your camera settings and see what you find.

Do you edit the photos before uploading? What file format is the file (jpg, tiff, other)? How large is the file?

Well that is kind of the point. If we do not get either a thank you or at least a "helpful" then we come away thinking we have just wasted our time. Do that often enough and pretty soon those with the answers will stop answering.
