How to disable unsolicited offers from sellers?

I'm a seller, and often look at other listings to research prices.  A day later, I'll get random offers for things I've simply looked at.  Someone just sent me an offer for an identical thing I'm selling, so I accepted their offer thinking they wanted to buy mine.  Only to realize the offer was to buy their item which I simply looked at yesterday.  Now I have to go through the hassle of canceling the dubious sale.  It's a really shady and underhanded practice, but nothing new for eBay I guess.

How do I disable these unsolicited  offers?

Don't feel too bad, I almost made that exact same mistake awhile ago.  It is very confusing as the messages are a bit ambiguous when you have the same item listed .  It is just one of the reasons that I do not send offers for items with no watchers.  I even go as far as ending items  that are on my 'send offer" list that have no watchers and then relist using sell similar.  I am not sure that it is " shady and underhanded practice", but rather just another sign that Ebay has no clue as to how sellers work, nor do they care

Thank you for owning up to your mistake.  Very refreshing.

Lately we had a rash of sellers blaming their mistake or typo on ebay,

calling it a "glitch" or computer problem.

Yes those offers are annoying.  I can see if you're watching something,

but not just for looking at it.  I don't think there is a way to turn them off.

Did eBay have anything to say about this?

@schleeb

What would eBay have to say about a pbcak issue?

Seems that we have the option to disable offers in our settings, as was an option 1-1/2 years ago when this thread was posted.

I'm confused I think. Offers when sent only go to someone who saved a listing in their watch. Not to someone who just looked at something. I have received tons of offers but only because I put it in my watch. Never received one for looking. So if I'm not getting them and you are, then there must be something I turned off but I don't remember doing it. Maybe someone out there knows and can help ?

If you do not want to receive offers from sellers, go to your Communication Preferences, look under Buying Activity and uncheck "Offers to buyers" and save the changes.

eBay allows sellers to send offers to users that have not opted out of offers who have added an item to the Watch List, added an item to the cart, or viewed an item more than once. Viewing an item listing and refreshing the page apparently counts as viewing an item more than once, at least if my experience is any indication.
