I put an item up for sale and was contacted by a buyer who wanted to know if they could pick it up locally. They won the auction and then asked me to send them an invoice with the shipping zeroed out.
I wasn't thinking and I made the shipping cost zero but didn't change the order from shipping to local pick up. The buyer paid the amount owed and came to pick it up. But now the order is sitting in limbo in my dashboard at the "buyer paid" stage. And the funds he paid are frozen without a way for me to confirm he picked up the order.
How do I complete this order? is there a way to change it to local pick up after the fact?

I remember specifically telling my husband that we didn't need pictures because the landlord was a really nice guy. Hubs took them anyhow. Those pictures won my case.
So, someone can be a really nice guy, until it comes to money.
Never met a con artist that I did not like:
goes with the system them crooks use......

@dnasilver You obviously do not understand how eBay's metrics work regarding late shipping defects, Item not received claims, etc. Sellers can't construct their own deals outside the processes eBay has in place ... if they could the OP could have simply dropped the shipping requirement from the order even POST purchase then selected Local Pick up and not have bothered to post here to ask "what do I do now???". Not even sure how you misconstrued the post as a way of thinking of others ... it had nothing to do with others, it was all about how to work within the eBay venue parameters ...
So, I respect your opinion but do not agree with your perspective ...

My perspective came from your statement: "Any time you leave something for a Buyer to do you are at risk like hoping they don't file an Item not Received claim."
Sure seems pretty obvious with your chosen words. I am not sure how that is misconstrued when words have meanings. That is all I was commenting on, best not to assume what others understand or don't understand on how eBay's metrics work.

Lincoln wrote a true statement. I don't understand how you can think differently. Anytime you leave a door open a crook can come in. He is not saying everyone that walks by is a crook.

You should have said "No problem, just pay cash when you pick it up".

any time you get in a car or walk or breath..........rather live without ingrained fear of maybe this or that. It is sad so many live with fear and hate of the unknown "what about" this or that. I don't understand how people live like that. Care to shared why so many do?

Well such is that folks have learned to use the item not as described case so they get all the money back.
Such is a fact.
Leave a user to many choices and they will chose the wrong ones: which then the seller may have to have the transaction ended of canceled. (such damages sellers metrics....)
Second is they can take such wrong and will file a return.. returns do not help sellers metrics.
Non of this is fear: it is the normal of people and action reaction of such. Most folks caught in such are not crooks per say, just folks trying...
It is easier to limit choices and this saves time and therefore money.
As for the fear comment you go with in a different post:
A great many things in this world are in the category of " It only takes once". Meaning think before doing.
Not fear as such just being and using common sense, with seems to be lacking .....
If one can simple avoid trouble as a seller one should.

So I guess the consensus is that there is no way to resolve this and I should just take it on the chin and not do it again next time?

No that is not the consensus. So far that we don't know if it worked you for you and there is nothing to take on the chin as you speak. Did you get ripped off some how?

I know this is an older post but I thought to send my solution so that hopefully anyone else having this issue finds the fix.
Ok so here is what you do if you have sold and item that has the settings for being shipped but the buyer is picking it up locally.
1. Mark the item as shipped.
2. click on add tracking, in the second field drop down scroll until you see the option Buyer - Ebay and select that option.
3.Enter the buyers ebay user name as the tracking number and the click save or enter(sorry I cannot recall what it says at the end) and this should update and show the item as delivered with an estimated delivery date. Hopefully this helps.

Maybe not the best solution. Without the QR code for local pickup you have no way to prove the buyer picked up the item. You may want to read the following.
Specifically the following section.
How to arrange a local pickup
After making your purchase, contact the seller to arrange a time and place to collect your item, and agree on how you’ll pay for it.
The seller will let you know which payment methods they accept. In addition to credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or PayPal, you can sometimes pay for local pickup items by internet banking, check, or money order—either beforehand or when you pick up your item. Sellers may also accept cash for local pickup purchases.
After you’ve completed your purchase, we’ll send an email with a Local Pickup code (a QR code and a 6 digit code) to your Messages. You can either print off your email or show the seller the message on the app when you collect your item. The seller will scan or enter the code on the eBay app to confirm you’ve picked up your item.

I just had a thought because I am in the same boat. I printed the label, then the buyer decided to come get the item. So, I'm simply going to ship an empty envelope after it's picked up. The buyer is aware and I have proof through messages that this solution was conveyed and accepted.

For future situations, if you had changed the shipping method on the invoice to Local Pickup, instead of just zeroing out the price, it would have given you the usual options with the code to confirm pickup. I would agree with others who said just mark it as shipped and hope you have an honest buyer.
