How long does an eCheck take to clear these days? A week plus?

I sold something, and a day later, I was asked when I was going to ship.  I saw it listed as, "awaiting payment," so I said, "Tomorrow, if you pay for it."  A couple of rounds later I realized that it had been paid on Feb. 16, but with an eCheck, and PayPal had a note saying it should clear by Feb. 21.  I explained to the buyer that it would ship after the eCheck clears.  As of Feb. 23, it still has not cleared.  I used to get eChecks a lot, but none in recent years, and this one seems to be taking a lot longer than what I remember.  Is this normal?

@electrola_man   Normally 3-5 Business days ... however, I have had a few go long enough that they simply fail and payment is never made.  I think some Buyers may try using them in hopes the Seller "thinks" the payment has been made and ships without knowing it.  The Classic My eBay SOLD page would show a 1/2 darkened dollar sign as an indication that payment is not fully complete.  Then in checking PayPal there was (if memory serves) a note that an e-check was being processed.

(Hello @Anonymous , you need to read the next part)

Now, the New Sold Page has NO visual indication that an e-check is being used or that there may be a problem or delay with the payment.  So the new Sold page is almost designed so that Sellers can accidentally ship "thinking" everything is okay ...

It should clear in the next day or 2, it's normal to take a couple of days longer, just don't ship until then.

The last e-check I had was three or so months ago, and if I remember right it took four days to clear.

That sounds about right.  However, if it fails the first time it will be re-presented so it may take longer to either clear or fail.

OP back with final note:  The eCheck issued on 2/16/19 cleared this morning, 2/25/19.  That seems like a very long time, though maybe it's not that out of line considering that the 16th was Saturday, and Monday the 18th was a Holiday, and it cleared early today, a Monday.  It's done, and I shipped this morning.  Thanks for your comments.

Honestly I never even knew e-checks were still in play for years and years. Everything I have is IPR and all fixed price. Are you telling me that there probably have been tons of e-checks paid to me without knowing for the past so many years, they ended up in my awaiting shipment page, and I shipped them all prematurely?

Everyday I check my sold pages and I've never seen anything in my awaiting payment page since I made everything IPR since about 10 years ago.

If you use IPR, the buyer can't pay with an e-check. The payment will be denied since the payment is not immediate and the item remains for sale - at least that's supposed to be how it works. In reality I have no idea if it actually works as it's supposed to.

Hi @mr_lincoln, I've gotten this feedback over to our developers for review. Seller's can check the PayPal for the details to confirm cleared payment before shipping and I will work on improvements on my end, no problem!

Oh, gotcha. I guess I alienated all of the e-check buyers 10 years ago. Sorry e-echeckers. I wonder what percentage of all buyers that is.

Hi @Anonymous , before I forget, thanks for posting here on the moaning and groaning thread about the new Sold Page format, now on to business  ... there needs to be a visual indication on eBay's Sold page ... Sellers are not going to check every single sale on PayPal to make sure it is okay.  Maybe folks who sell on average 1 item a day would have the time to do that but those who sell much higher volumes don't ... too time consuming when there "was" a visual indication from eBay alerting Sellers to check on the transaction.  The new page simply states "Paid" and can not be believed and here's why ... when a label is printed the word "Paid" changes to "Shipped" which is NOT true, it means a Label was generated but the item may or may not have been shipped ... all labels we printed yesterday (Sunday) stated Shipped when in fact the packages we sitting here waiting to be shipped on a day the Post Office is open.
