How does eBay count days for 30 day return policy?

I'm sure it's something goofy like they don't count weekends or Sunday's are not real days.

But I have a 30 day return policy.

Customer buys item on 10/4 and it is delivered on 10/6. On 10/30 they request a return. eBay says they have until 11/20 to ship the item.

I may not be smart man... but I know what a day is. Last I checked her 30 day return started on delivery date and would extend to the next that mail runs on 11/6

10/6 to 11/20 is 45 days. So let's eliminate weekend days. How many weekend days are in a month? Average would be 8 weekend days... So that would still be 38 calendar days. How does eBay get to 45 day returns on a 30 day return policy?

It's 30 days to request a return. Once the return is opened a new clock starts and that timeline can be pushed out based on various factors.

I believe it's 30 days from the date they request the return.

you assuming that the 30 day return policy and the buyer ship back date are the same.  NOT.

They have 30 days to OPEN the case from delivery date.  Then they have more time to physically put it in the mail.  2-3 weeks IDK as it always seems to vary.  It got wonky during covid.

This quest stands on the edge of a blade...stray but a little and you shall fail to the ruin of us all.

As posted 30 from delivery to request.  (calendar days ?)

Actual return appears to be, in this instance, 15 business days from today.

I always thought of it as, "Your buyer has forever + 1 day to return the item." It's too stinking long, IMHO...

Eh, I disagree. Both of the returns I've ever had were opened on the same day that the buyer received the item, and at my B&M retail job I would say probably 95% of all returns we get occur within a week of purchase. But that doesn't mean there aren't perfectly valid reasons for a buyer to take longer to open a return.

Say someone buys a NIB something as a birthday gift for a friend. They want to make sure it arrives in time, so they order it two weeks before the friend's birthday. The friend opens it up on their birthday... and the item is defective. The buyer should be able to return the defective item, but it may take them some time to do so because they need to get it back from their friend and then they need to find the time to pack it back up and then drop it at the post office. Perfectly valid reason for return, perfectly valid reasons for not being able to return it immediately.

Perhaps, but you do not seem to know the difference between filing a return request and shipping an item.

The 30 day deadline is for filing the return with eBay, not for shipping the item to you.

As noted in the other posts, the 30 days is the maximum period before requesting the return.  It's stated in the fine print right in the listing:

It was a play on a Forest Gump movie line.

And from your incomplete answer, you don't seem to know either.

How does eBay count days for 30 day return policy?

Various factors?

I have around 10 responses but no real answers.

So let's say they have 30 days to "request" a return. Do we not know what the timeframe is for returning the item? Is it really a mystery?

It would appear as if it were arbitrarily set and not documented anywhere.

It's bad enough to wait 4 days for non-paying bidders...

But to have my item not listed for sale for 45+ days because the buyer decided at the last minute the jeans didn't fit is mildly frustrating.

Time is money and eBay again is bending over backwards to please customers at the seller's expense.

Did you check the policy pages?

Various factors =

* Whether or not the buyer printed the eBay generated return label. Printing the label extends the window the buyer has to return.

*Whether the return label was eBay generated or seller purchased outside of eBay. Labels purchased outside of eBay are given a longer window since eBay can't see if buyer has printed or not.

How long a buyer has to ship the return:

Once the return is accepted, we'll provide the buyer with a date by which they should ship the item back to you. After 15 business days, if we don't see any indicators that the item is on its way back to you, we may close the return and protect you from negative feedback. Some returns may remain open for up to 35 business days. Returns cannot be closed at the request of a seller.

  • eBay or seller-provided labels: If an eBay label was automatically provided or you provide non-eBay return labels and upload tracking, we may close the return if we don't see tracking scans or signals from the buyer showing the item was shipped within 15 business days of when the label was provided. If tracking is not uploaded, we may wait up to 35 business days before closing the return
  • No label provided: If the buyer is responsible for return shipping, we may close the return if we don't see tracking scans or signals showing the item was shipped within 15 business days of the return being accepted. If you are responsible for providing return shipping and do not upload a label, we may wait up to 35 business days from the date the return was accepted before closing the return.

@bamorris

30 day policy means that the buyer has 30 days to start a return.  (It doesn't mean the seller gets it back before day 30!)

Once accepted, they have (I believe) 3 weeks to return it.
