These people are misinformed. Having something in writing means next to nothing when dealing with customer service agents, and much of the time they are not working directly for eBay and are not located in the US. A judge is also not going to make eBay responsible for everything that a customer service agent does, and having an overly thorough training program is not necessarily important when trying to prevent customer service agents from getting the company sued (much like what Amazon does).
Might as well take some time to think things over and be a little more practical about how you approach money and life.
