Hidden bids or invisible bidders

I have been outbidded by someone who placed a bid 4 hours before me but the other bidder was never shown or registered on the bidding history until the auction has ended. Any ideas what it is all about?

I asked the eBay buying team, spoke to 6-7 people there, one or two of them told me it was the auto bid feature. But when I put an auto bid on an item which had no bid, I was registered straight away as the first bidder. So this hidden bid is NOT an auto bid feature!!!

I have googled this hidden bid issue, apparently someone else also asked about it on this eBay site back in 2019 but no comment to it at all. So this hidden bids have been going on for at least 3 years!

How unfair is that to have hidden bids on eBay???

I don't think you understand how bidding works and/or it wasn't explained to you correctly.
Can you please give us the item number so we can look at the bidding history and explain to you what happened?

i think eBay sucks that it allows hidden bidders they need to be sued for such scruples activity i was out bit by someone who place a bid  4 days before the ending day the only way is to put a price which maybe you are not willing to pay for the item the whole thing is stupid - you will just have to walk away knowing that someone 

wants to pay more for the item than you  --- another bid I was watching for several growing in small increment 

then in the last second even if I was the highest one outbid me but he put a silly and outrageous price ??? the concept of hidden bidders should be really banned all altogether

All buyers eBay IDs are masked for privacy. When you look at a sellers feedback looking at the buyers IDs they are all masked. 
Sellers will often set their auctions as private for the same reason.  Although it is overkill.
