I don't sell sports cards (perhaps something similar) but it should not matter what you sell. You need to try it for yourself. Use promotion on maybe on a half of your listings. Once you get sales, you can compare which is more productive, promoted or non-promoted listings. Also, don't use the percentage recommended by ebay, nor the 'dynamic' rates, before you get the feeling how things work. Start with a lower rate and if you get no sales, slowly increase it.
All my listings are promoted and I would say 90% are sold via promotions. ebay recommends 8-10% rate. I use 4%. Perhaps I could get more sales with a higher rate, but what I get is just enough for me.

If cards are in demand, no need to promote, if they are not, promoting will not help much.

That's a huge number, only 10% organic, probably before promotions came along, 100% of your items sold thru organic search.

@ten_o_nine - Saw your post and want to clarify.. thx
So Basically, you're saying net:net - it doesn't help to promote? Just curious. Looking through various conversations on here looking for guidance as well.
Is this a fair translation of your reply? "In demand, no need to promote. Not in demand, promoting may help slightly, but not much?"
Or.. did you intend to give different advice for items that are not in high demand? Would love to figure this out in general... a good strategy / guidance, etc. Feel like I'm giving eBay money right now and would like to be more efficient.
